Having considering a trip to Little Cayman this year on my own this year, I have been shocked by the number of stories I've read about the dive operation associated with one of the most popular resorts there. In the last 2 years there have been numerous diving accidents and at least one well-documented coverup. Has the manager at R.D. tried to address these diving safety issues and has anyone been there and dove recently?

Are you reading the CDNN? If so, try to find a more reliable source.

I spent a week diving with Reef Divers and have nothing but praise for the operation. They gave excellent briefings, with detailed information on UW topography, suggested route, maximum depth and maximum time. If you wished, you could follow the DM around or you and your buddy could do your own thing.

That said, I saw a few divers whose level of skills were appalling. In one case, the diver hired a personal DM to literally hold her hand the entire dive. I wouldn't be surprised if some inattentive and unsafe diver got in trouble. It most likely would not be Reef Divers' fault.

If you need someone to hold your hand (and you can't/don't want to pay for your own DM), Little Cayman isn't for you. However, if you want a professional dive operation that gives you all the information and support you need to execute wonderful dives, go for it.

Would you please give the details on the "well-documented coverup". Also, what are the "diving safety issues" you mention?

Pretty much anyplace with any volume has had issues and accidents. RD is no different, but they have always been a well run and professional op, and if anything have leaned to the conservative side. (I've been diving with them many times starting not long after they opened.) I've heard nothing of "numerous" accidents and nothing that was their fault.

"well-documented coverup" is sort of an oxymoron.

We dove with them last June. We had no problems, nor did we see anything out of the norm. As mentioned above they give very detailed briefings, and do lean toward the conservative side. It just so happens that we booked our trip with them today. We are going back and can't wait.

You beat me to it. :crafty:
