3 days til we leave for LCBR!!! the forecast for cayman islands is calling for 60% rain most of the days we'll be there!!! please tell me that doesn't mean it's gonna rain most of the time!!

From when I was there it means that it might rain at some point during the day. It usually clouds up and rains in the afternoon. Really doesn't affect the diving unless it really storms.

It rained one night while we were there and was clear by morning. It rained early one morning (6 AM) and was clear by the time we boarded the boat.

There was a quick shower on one dive and we could see it raining. By the time we were completing the dive, the rain was over.

Let's just say the rain doesn't last, usually!

60% change of rain on any given day means 40% chance of no rain that day.
Rain won't affect you while you're underwater.
Besides, imnsho a rainy day in the Caymans is better than a perfect weather day most other places.

The way the forecasts are done, if there is a chance of rain at ANY time during the day that chance ends up being the forecast. In the rainy season, which this is, there is always a good chance of a tropical thunderstorm in the afternoon, but these storms are 20 - 40 minutes long and then the sun shines again. So the forecast will call for rain day after day but most of the day will still be sunny.

awesome, i feel better now:) leaving very very early saturday!!!!! yippee!!!

The only time we ever had a dive canceled was in 2005 in Cayman Brac when Hurricane Emily was coming. Then we only lost one dive and that was so there was enough time to get everything put up.

Emily was a dud and all we had were strong winds and huge waves!

Over the years, I've seen a lot of weather on the Brac. In general, it tends to run in "streaks" - you can get luckly or unlucky.

A decade ago, the typical fall pattern was to have an intense thunderstorm like clockwork every night at around 2-3AM.

One year, we had rain during the day for ~7 days in a row. The guy who was with us on that trip was blamed as being a "Bad Weather Magnet", since it all cleared out as soon as he left and the next week was really nice.

Even with rains during the day and every day, it generally wan't that much of a problem - - the storms typically blow through in an hour or two...I've had trips where at the start of the dive it was overcast (but seemingly OK) when we dropped in the water for a dive, come back an hour later to find the sun out but the topside crew wet, cold and miserable...and we had no clue that it had rained while we were down.

Bottom line is to expect some rain; pack along a good jacket and use it when appropriate. If the weather's really bad at ~8:30AM when the diveboat's typically getting ready to depart, they'll simply just delay for an hour and let the storm blow over.

And with a departure this weekend, since there's no meaningful storm activity right in the Cayman region, your flights should be relativley uneventful.

Checking NOAA, there's a tropical wave that's approaching Nicaragua that's expected to make landfall by Friday...its northern edge is right at the Caymans. There's also a broad area of Low pressure around 200 miles ENE of Curacao, moving west at 20-25mph. There's currently a clear sky gap between the two systems, so I'd expect Sunday-Monday to be nice...its too soon to tell how far north this second system might get.

I led a group to the Brac DURING a tropical storm. It was sunny on our arrival and the day we flew off. It was serious winds, rain, and waves in between.

We didn't miss a dive, and the group gave no complaints. I know the geography around LC is different, but don't let rain be an issue. After gearing up in heat and humidity, a bit of rain is actually quite refreshing. Remember, this isn't cold rain, it's warm down there.

As long as wind/waves aren't excessive, even if does rain, it's not any problem. Besides, during the hot summer, it almost always rains briefly during the afternoon.

You'll have a great time, I would bet on it. And don't forget to post a trip report when you get back. I like to take vicarious dive trips!

Hi Donna,

Good to see you here, too! I hope your fears are put to rest and that you have a great trip. We'll be watching the weather and hoping for the best. Don't forget a trip report here and on CAG!

Where else have you dived? The Mrs and I like to try different places and always are interested in comparisons to teh Cayman Islands. Almost did Barbados last year, but ended up going to GCM again!

Happy travels
