Hi Gang

The wife and I are becoming avid snorklers here in Fla in the freshwater springs. My question would be are the lionfish in shallow enough water for me to hunt them? We might be going to the keys in the next 6mths-1yr and if we havent taken the plunge to get O/W cert yet I would love to exterminate some. I have no issues getting to 30ft deep and hope by then even further .

thanks

You should have no problem finding some in shallow water, but I have found them mostly in 30' and deeper. Be sure you have the right equipment, and keep in mind the sting can be very painful. If stung apply very warm water to site.

thanks for the reply

I plan on gloves and a pair of shears to cut the spines and then the head off to feed to some of our other friends on the reef:D
or can i just throat cut them and take them off my spear and let them sink down to the bottom??

Here's a cool video of the winners of REEF's last lionfish derby free-diving for lionfish. They caught 289 lionfish in a day using only nets between 10 to 20 feet. You can see that they were quite successful!

Try going to shallow patch reefs where you would typically find lobsters.

We personally discourage fish-feeding but if you're in an area where there aren't many snorklers, divers or swimmers around, leaving them at the bottom of the reef doesn't hurt. Something will get to them. Otherwise, try eating them! They're delicious (taste a little like hogfish) and there are some good recipes out there. If you're worried about how to deal with them, this webpage will give you some safe-handling tips.

Happy hunting and good luck! :)
