The three point (or paralyzer) point is a key one to make note of! Most people who I have meet that have been stung for stung because they only had a spear with one point. Since it is typical to just use a dive sheer to remove the venomous spines underwater, they'd go to do this, and the fish would spin and nail them! This is not a problem with a paralyzer , since the multiple prongs prevent the fish from spinning unexpectedly.
I personally use a short pole spear, and cut the spines off (all dorsal, first spine of anal fin as well as first spine of pelvic) before shoving the fish into a drybag. No gloves.

Is it better to use a barb or barbless I would also like to keep the ones big enough to eat
We use 4 or 5ft pole spears with barbed paralyzer tip, sometimes they try to swim off the spear if you didn't stick them good, like if you spear the fish against something. I got stuck on sunday, probably the worst pain I've ever felt. Worse than broken bones, cuts, burns, etc. It was like someone was bashing my hand with a hammer while holding it in a fire. Then ya add the hot water and its even worse for a minute or two. Its awful

Does the pain just finally go away on its own or is there a home remedy are they easy to get off a barbed tipped or does it tear the meat up once u rip em off

Has anyone been stung by a hardheaded catfish and a lion fish? If so, how do they compare? (And sorry for your bad luck)
It eventually goes away on its own. Applying heat helps breakdown the venom. Its not like the pain goes away, it lessens as the venom spreads. Then it stays sore. I'm on day 3 and my hand is still a little swollen, the backside of my hand is still tender and my thumb (where I got stuck) still hurts a bit.
Its not too hard to get them off the barbed tip, grab the fish by the cheeks, with a gloved hand, and pull em off quickly. And it doesn't tear the bad enough to affect anything.
I've been stuck by a channel cat (saltwater) and a lionfish and the catfish sting was like a paper cut compared to the pain from a lionfish. Its bad. Its my fault I got greedy. I had 4 in my left hand and 2 fish on the spear, went to reset the spear against a bare spot on the wreck and slid my hand up too far and got stuck.
