That looks a little like the causeway I've crossed going over to St. Michael's Mount.
 
Are there any drawbacks to performing an equipment/buddy check right as you don your gear (or at least before you approach the water and begin the risk of potentially falling over)? Seems like that would be one of the important lessons here.
It is a good idea, I can only speculate that this was just an unforunate preparation mistake, as falling in would be the unexpected accident to allow for.

I have made worse mistakes many times, try to learn from those and these as welll....
 
At the very least here its a reminder that even an inch or 2 of fast flowing water can knock someone off balance. Also tidal causeways get algae and weed on them so become slippery. Add this to the problem of walking around in full dive kit and its a reminder to take care.

Consider doing checks as soon as your dive gear is on rather than before entering water. Also make sure gear is FULLY on and checked before going near water whether its walking or on a boat.
