If this purchase was an electronic one, it is possible that the authorize.net software did this. If the software is unable to get an approval quite fast (a matter of 4-6 seconds), it will often disconnect and try again. Unfortunately, the electronic traffic still goes to authorize.net, even if the software disconnects. Depending on the traffic at that at the ACH (all cards, no matter which type, go through a clearing center. The ACH clears cards for North America), the card gateway could have the attempts set "high". A telling sign would be the exact times of the attempts to authorize. I bet they are all within a matter of 60-70 seconds.

One thing I'll never understand about people ordering from LP. Many online shops out there will match or beat their price, plus they offer manu warranty, so why even order from LP? I use them as a price match engine.

LP will price match others too, and depending on the brand you want. They have manu warranty and their warranty. Oceanic, Aeris, and Cressi are some of the brands they are an authorize dealer of. And If you call them, you can at time even get a better price. I visit the store, and get things below their advertise price.

Liesure pro is ok,but if i buy online i like dealing with Authorized dealers.
wet suits , boots and those kind of things are ok.
but if you are buying a reg or computer , buy off a authorized dealer.
Try scubatoys next time they are authorized dealers and will match or beat liesurepro's prices.:D

They are not just a graymarket dealer, which I think alot of people think that is how they get all their goods. But they are an authorized deal for some of the major brands too like I stated earlier in this post.

But Phil, the OP said that some of the other attempts were for different amounts. Would the software do this?

Sigh. Well I wasnt trying to bash Leisurepro I was just trying to figure out if this has happened before and to see if I should be concerned. Like I said seems alot of people have had good results with them. On the response that what difference it would have made if LP called me instead of the bank is that it could have been solved right there than involving my bank to put a hold on the purchase. Im glad this was just an unusual case.
Thank you all for your responses.

If you feel uncomfortable about it, just give them a call. They are alway helpful. One question when did you place the order?

The issue at hand is why did they attempt to authorize the cc a total of 7 times instead of calling the OP, verifying the info and possibly requesting another form of payment? And obviously LP knew there was a problem when the card was not authorized the first couple of times. Whether it was insufficient funds, wrong cc#, wrong exp date, frozen account, whatever, they knew there was a problem if it would not authorize.

They could have handled it differently for sure. But the real issue at hand is what practical harm did the OP suffer? As far as I can tell, none at all. Therefore, making a big stink over it is just looking for some reason to be outraged.

Will this thread ever end?? theres a million different things that could have happened !! Who cares ? close this thread!!!

I didn't feel that the OP was making a big stink, I took it as the OP was relating the story and asking if they should be concerned. It would make me concerned too if a company that I was ordering from did the same thing. No, LP is not in the habit of bad business practices as far as credit cards go (the greymarket topic is NOT the issue here and should be left for those threads), but they had one person working for them that did not practice good customer service in this instance and since this is the OP's first transaction with them, it made them worried.

I hope the salesperson in question gets some better training after this and will not continue to try to authorize a card that has been declined at least twice.

Hey, I was wondering if anything had been solved with LP about your purchase. I hope that LP would do the right thing and fix the problem.

But Phil, the OP said that some of the other attempts were for different amounts. Would the software do this?

I don't think it would do different amounts. It should do the exact amount shown in the shopping cart. There is ONE situation that might explain the different amounts. When you place an order in most modern software that is PCI compliant, it AUTHORIZES ONLY the card for that amount. When the order is filled, the merchant then goes in and CAPTURES the funds. In our case, we often capture LESS than the authorization, due to changes and adjustments on the invoice.

On occasion, when we attempt to capture LESS than was authorized, the gateway will at first not recognize the transaction. On occasion, it will try multiple times before it is successful. This is not a situation unique to online dive stores. It happens will all types of electronic credit card transactions, especially gas stations and food establishments.

All this said, I don't know what happened here. All is say is just supposition.

As Phil explained several times, it may not have been the LP people doing it but rather the card authorization systems. Keep in mind this all apparently happened within a few hours on one day. For all we know LP was going to call later that day but the bank was quicker. The OP provided vague details and has not answered questions for clarification.
