At least in my experience of my own lights and my friends' lights, you're going to have more problems with the cords and the connectors that you will with the bulbs on a Salvo HID. They are tough lights.

I am super carefull with the HID's but 2 bulbs on my DR 10W have burned out in less than a year, and in the Dominican Republic it is a real pain to get replacements, not to mention the cost. If the Salvo LED is comparable to an 10W HID I will buy one for sure. The DR LED 500 is for sure not as bright.

I am probably going to buy a Salvo 12W LED, from what everyone is saying they seem to be as good illumination wise as a 10 W HID and way more reliable.

Illumination V.S. Penetration...I think focusable HID's have the edge when in reduced vis. It seems LED's light up everything( including the cloudiness) whereas HID"s penetrate thru better.

That isn't inherent to LED light, however, that is just due to the way the reflector is constructed and the difficulty of the typical multiple-LED construction in getting a tight beam off the reflector. Single LEDs like the photon torpedo or new halcyon backup LED have a pretty nice spot.

Some very exciting developments with LED technology going on right now, finally we are getting white LEDs of decent power so you do not need to use RGB and mix, or multiple white LEDs to get decent power. I had one demonstrated to me recently that is a whopping 40w! Better still with proper modulation you can tweak the spectrum for warm or cool white, or better still for divers to avoid that wavelengths that are most absorbed by water. Since this one has a small, single point of light (at 1/5 power I couldn't see anything for an hour after looking at it!). As of today the only commercial product using the technology is the Samsung DLP TV (and that is actually a slightly older version). Sorry to go OT since these are not available in dive lights yet but I work with this stuff so I can go a little overboard!

Here you go, read it and weep, 3000 lumens!

The difference in the brightness is the DR 500 is 500 Lumens, the Salvo 12 Watt Led is 750 Lumens. So it will defiantly be brighter then the DR.

Has anyone seen/tried the DR 700 LED? Website says 700 lumens, and rumour has it that they are fairly reasonably priced.

The new diverite light is actually 750lm if I recall correctly. Still a multi-emitter deal so the beam will be more diffuse than the salvo light which means less penetration.

Salvo makes a better quality light in my opinion.

If you can afford it I would seriously think about getting the 21W LED from Salvo. It is a really SWEET light. I like it much better than my friends 12W mostly because I don't like how the handle on the 12W pops on. I also like opening the canister to charge the light instead of unscrewing the head.
