I like the advice.
I like the help.
I like supporting local business.
I like the folks who own the shop, and like supporting their livelihood and, what's more, I like the folks who work there and like to help keep them working there.
I like to pick it up and put it down and turn it over before I commit cash to it.
Most of all, I like going and BSing for 2 hours when all I needed was some o-rings.

What he said...I like getting air fills. LP can't give me those.
I especially like the BSing. LP won't take the time.
I like trying things out. LP will charge me shipping for that. :eyebrow:

I stay at my LDS. No matter the price, but my LDS is in a highly competitive area, with 6 shops in a 20 mile area. So, their prices aren't bad.

6 in your (our) area? Could you PM me that list? We're in San Clemente, and new to diving. We have found a few shops, but are eager to explore more LDS's.

Thanks...

BTW...one of those we found has a very aggressive price match guarantee: 150% of any authorized dealer advertised price difference, or 100% of any unauthorized dealer price difference...within 30 days of sale. We tested this out, and received $240 store credit ($80 diff on each of the regs we bought...times 150%) from this LDS. This allowed us to pick up the weights, hoods, and dry bag we had not yet bought.

just my $0.02

I always buy from my LDS. Without him I wouldn't be diving because I wouldn't have met any of the divers who are now my friends and dive buddies. I make sure he is fair because I don't like paying full retail and he knows that. He usually gives me a decent price and in some cases has given me great deals if I whined loud enough.

The service I get from my LDS is worth every penny I paid over LP prices.

If you have a great LDS SUPPORT THEM. PLEASE!

Generally i only buy things that have to be tried on in a shop (BCs, drysuit etc). Absolutely everything else i buy online as quite often it can be 30%+ cheaper (and still just as much covered warantee wise and so on).

I wouldnt trust "advice" from a dive shop - ive heard so much utter rubbish come out of several of them trying to push a product theyre a supplier for and rubbish the alternative theyve not ive learnt not to trust them.
I shop internet first and then only if absolutely desperate "have to have it for tomorrow" do i contemplate going to a shop.

First off I should say that the LDS serves a valuable need. Training, and service both make our LDS valuable. The instructors I've worked with so far have all been great, and provide very valuable knowledge.

However the retail section of the LDS that I use IMO is typical of many. They price personal items like masks, fins, and snorkels 15-20% above MSRP. This is NOT just beyond typical street prices from places like ScubaToys, but beyond the MSRP. They then provide the student a 20% discount. The net result is that one pays MSRP or a bit below for personal items. My experience with the new divers in my OW class is that almost ALL students purchase personal stuff from the LDS. While there is nothing illegal in the way they do business, I feel the practice is deceptive.

I guess one has to take it item by item, and weight the various factors like what service may be included (like with a reg or BCD), is it important to try the gear fit (like with a wetsuit), and markup on an item by item basis. I've found that for many gadget type items like mask straps, reg bags, and lanyards LP pricing is not much better then the LDS...they are ALL HIGH ;)

I have purchased a few items from my LDS, but the money I spend with them generally goes for training, or tank rental.

The LDS that I use is busy. They always have people shopping there, the pool generally has people using it, and their travel agency appears to do very well. I have zero issue with using other places to purchase equipment when the savings is good.

I paid under $200 for my mask, fins, snorkel, and boots. Most people in my OW class paid closer to $400, and a couple even more. When we start talking those differences, than I just can not go with the LDS.

JVM4.0:
Recently, my wonderful wife bought me a dive light. A Princeton Surge. She included the receipt, in case I wanted to trade for a different light ( I had made noises about and LED light). With taxes and all, she paid $42 for the light. Awfully nice of her.

Now, here's the rub.........I have noticed that places like Liesure Pro charge $29 for the exact same item. My LDS claims they keep track of internet pricing, and do their best to meet competitive pricing on popular items. I don't begrudge the fact that the LDS has to make money to remain in business, I love the idea of shopping locally. I just don't think they have to make all their profit on me.

So, what's your Point of Pain when comparing pricing between the LDS and the internet? My wife paid a 30% upcharge, over and above a "normal" markup on the product from the LDS. What is the difference YOU willing to pay for the priveledge of buying from your LDS?

JVM4.0, if you're complaining over a paltry ~$15, I truly feel sorry and envy you. The LDS'es in my area (we've got 2 within 20 miles of my home) mark things up quite a bit more than $13. When it came time for me to buy my lights for my night dive, I checked with the LDS. To make a long story short, I was able to purchase a UK eLed C8 Light and a UK SL6 Light from Scubatoys for much less than the price that the one LDS wanted for the non-eLED C4 by itself.

Needless to say, I bought the 2 lights from Scubatoys.

For me, the aggrivation of having to order something and wait for it to be delivered, ect isn't worth the $15. For $50 or more, that is a different story.

I guess each one of us has a threshold that only we know when it is breached. All I can say is that the LDS for the most part, offers service and other intangibles that you'll never get from LP or other online sellers (possible exception being Scubatoys, because they are actually an LDS first and foremost who just happens to sell some stuff online).

I pretty much agree with what Saying said....

saying:
My breaking point is, generally, in the hundreds.

I far prefer buying in the shop for a bunch o' reasons:

I like the advice.
I like the help.
I like supporting local business.
I like the folks who own the shop, and like supporting their livelihood and, what's more, I like the folks who work there and like to help keep them working there.
I like to pick it up and put it down and turn it over before I commit cash to it.
Most of all, I like going and BSing for 2 hours when all I needed was some o-rings.

BUT, if I know exactly what I want and it would save me $100 to order it online instead of going through the shop... I put it to anyone to say it is my responsibility to spend the extra $100 just because of the reasons above.

However: if I go into the shop for, say, a wetsuit. I try a couple on and decide on which one and which size I like, I most certainly DO NOT run home and order it online because I can save even a couple hundred. The shop helped me, they let me mess with their stock... they're the ones getting the sale.

My breaking point isn't measured in dollars. I had decided to get my wife a special gift for her birthday. I checked internet prices at a number of sites, I went to a LDS (not the one I train with and frequent) and told the manager what I was wanting, and that I had to have it in 4 days since my better half was going on a dive trip. He not only guaranteed me that he'd have it in but if it wasn't in he'd pay to have it overnighted to her on her trip. It did show up on time and everyone was happy. I haven't been able to get that type of service from the net yet, without paying for it dearly.

Everyone has their own reasons for shopping or not shopping at a LDS, mine just isn't based on money alone.

pilot fish:

No issue. Plenty of public pools to rent.

no instructors

Not an issue with a club. We dont "buy" instructors or courses

,

No great loss. I fail to see what use they actually are in the real world. In a club environment they (i) dont exist and (ii) wouldnt serve any purpose if they did.
,
not even certified OW divers.

There are far more ways to get certified than relying and buying from a shop.

Helloooooooooooooooo??? Get the picture? Buy from your LDS. Support the diving community. :07:

I refuse to support anyone that rips me off. I buy cheapest. Especially in a club environment there is near no need at all for a rip-off dive shop.
