Sage, thanks so much for the great tour of your part of the world, and Marvel thanks for your sidewalk, wall, and hospitality – sorry I had to run in and out so fast and couldn’t be more sociable. Next time I’m down there we’ll try not to be run by Vinny’s school prep schedule.

I guess my inverted assent wasn’t fast enough to get out of the background of your great picture there. Great pictures – including Madonna – but I’m going to be on the look out for those aggressive little triggerfish you’ve got down there, three of my knuckles got little bites on them. :D

I still want to know how one finds the willpower to go to work when you live in such a great place to dive all the time.

My original reply to the grouper must of disappeared when my puter froze. Anyways, I thought it was a soapfish, but for some reason I have been thinking it is an aquarium throwaway. Bill thanks for the link, as this Panther Grouper looks pretty close. Hmm Indo-Pacific. Wonder how he got here.

I think you might have it, and it might explain why none of our books of Atlantic fish show it. The dorsal fin was certainly distinctive and the markings appear to be somewhere between juvenile and adult also.

It certainly looked healthy so we may have an intrusive species added to the reefs of Florida now.

Cromileptes altivelis – Panther, humpback, or Polka-dot grouper

Thanks and I hope next time I can catch up with you when I get to your end of the state.

Thats it!. I've never heard of a panther grouper. Sure was pretty though. It caught Jim's attention all the from the edge of the viz.

Ya know, one of you might want to contact REEF so they can add it to their list of Exotic Species.

I'll be away this Sunday, sorry...

LOL... I know I missed it. We visited a friend while he was in Orlando. Great pics, Oliver! This weekend more family is in town but if you're diving let me know. I miss the reef south of the pier, though I've found some nice patches north up to about a half-mile from the pier.

No soapfish or acquarium-alumni, tho...

I've been following the discussion about the fish in the picture - quite interesting. Please keep us posted if REEF gets back to you.

Is anyone doing a beach dive this weekend (13-14 Aug)? Please forgive my ignorance; I don't know if I am supposed to start a new thread or what. But I'd love to go diving this weekend, preferably Saturday morning. Any takers?

thanks,
toni
