Layering: does 3mm + 2mm = 5mm of warmth?

People's cold tolerance seems to vary considerably. I have a 5mm full, and a vest/hood 3mm/5mm. It is a great combo for me, most of my diving is 72-80. The other day I did two dives, each about an hour, at 58 degrees with both pieces on. I was fine in that. If I was going to dive colder than that on a regular basis I would look at drysuits very hard. For the tropics pick up a thin wetsuit, as you would be travelling to get there, it would pack a lot better.
