Lauderdale by the sea snorkeling

Hi, my 11 yearold son and I were thinking of going snorkeling around Lauderdale and the Keys, we have snorkeled before but all off beach snorkeling, is there good snorkeling around Lauderdale? He loves to see tropical fish but I'm not sure if snorkeling around Lauderdale was close to the beach and/or if it was a good place. Thank You if anyone could help us out. Dave and Nathan

Hi, my 11 year old son and I will be in Miami and was wondering if the snorkeling at Lauderdale was close to shore and if you see much in the way of tropical fish, we have snorkeled quite a bit but it's all been off beach snorkeling, we will also be trying the keys later this year, he loves to see tropical fish. make sure you have a flag. You can get one at Gold Coast Scuba. I think you can rent, but not positive. Go east till you see stuff, about a hundred yards, maybe less. have fun!

the reef at Lauderdale by the sea is very nice to snorkel & dive -- there is also the artificial shipwreck there (cannons etc). Steve @ Gold Coast does rent flags and mask/fin/snorkels if you need it. Tel (954) 616-5909 just stay away from the pier itself. shipwreck snorkel trail is on south side of pier near Datura. I usually see plenty of fish and turtles there.
