Shocking...

Why do you read that, 6 Foot Ray? Don't touch that magazine, it has PADI on it. It might rub off.... :D

I don't know why people focus on number of dives.

What really counts is number of minutes underwater multiplied by average depth divided by the sum of the visibility and temperature. Then you add that to the number of animals you saw, multiplied by their mass and divided by their place on the endangered/rarity list. Add that to the number of cubic feet you used with a multiple of .9 for a handicap if you used nitrox. Divide that by the average daily dive fee and post your score.

You guys crack me up. Diving is only one of the reasons many of us take dive vacations. Some of you make it sound like people getting less bottom time than you are doing it wrong.
We laugh at you laughing at us. :chuckle:

Your point is well taken - and I have no care for how many dives people do in a day - but when the author's stated purpose of the article was "to see how many dives one diver can do in a week in Bonaire..." you should be able to get more than three dives a day in. Sort of like having an article about "How many beers can one drink in Bavaria during Octoberfest..." which concludes with the author having had two Sam Adam's "Summer Light Ales" in the lobby of the Munich Airport Marriott.

We generally get 3-4 dives a day in, if we spend 2 weeks. If we are there for less time we try for 4-5.
finding its much easier to dive a lot in tropical waters. When we go to Catalina, 3 dives is a lot. We will rarely do 4 and sometimes we're happy with 2. It's a lot more tiring there with cold water and lugging gear from the hotel downtown. ( we stay at the McRae)
Bonaire is such easy shore diving. Very pleasant and simple logistics, once you get there.
If we were younger, I bet we would get even more, probably only being held back by nitrogen loading.

Re the 'point' of the article?? Epic Fail!! Aside from that, whatever happened to 'Quality vs Quantity'?? I'll take one reeeally good stint a day over three or four mediocre ones, any time ...

What is the point of going to Bonaire if not to maximize dives?

There are no mediocre dives on Bonaire.

18 dives in a week might be plenty IF I'm also trying to edit the video footage on a daily basis. On a recent trip to the Philippines I did 60 dives in 17 days with most of the dives being 80-120+ minutes... but then spent 27 straight days back at home editing all the footage!

The thing that was funny about the article was (if memory serves me) the title that they were trying to see how many dives they could do in a week. I don't care if someone does 4 or 40 dives in a week... that's their call. However, if they were trying to do as many as they could, 18 is a pretty paltry number. Besides, I didn't realize there was anything else to do BUT dive on Bonaire (tee hee).
