Does anyone know what the size limit for carryon is? Or in your experience what is largest you've been able to get away with.

The next time I fly somewhere, I'm going to be pretty close to the limit. I'm picking up a camera/laptop backpack which will eliminate one bag, but...

I'll also be traveling with housings (SLR and maybe video), lights, strobe(s), etc. And and Classic KISS rebreather.

Ideally I'd like to bring the 2 cases and backpack as carryons (of course that means pawning off one of my carryons to someone I'm traveling with).

According to Pelican the 1510 (19.75" x 11.00" x 7.60") is the FAA maxiumum carry on size.

Problem is I think it will be too small for my camera gear (I think it's too thin to even fit just the SLR housing) and I think it will be too small for the KISS (even if it's stripped).

I could swear that I've seen people bringing roller suitcases as carryons that are bigger than this case, though.

My Travelpro roller is the largest legal size, externally it's 22x14x9, the same external dimension as the Pelican. It will expand about 2in. more, but fully expanded, it won't always fit in the overhead bin, depends on the airline. And it has to be checked on any smaller plane like out of San Juan to the smaller Caribbean destinations. My Amphibico housing just fits loose packed with my clothes.

Oh you have hit on a pet peeve of mine. I have seen people bring on more....and larger...luggage than I checked in. They take up ALL the dang overhead space and ask to put things under your seat. Oh dont get me started

Insure the stuff for full value. Place it in a TSA locked Pelican. Check it though.

Or just buy a Sea and Sea.

The first method is the one that pro shooters utilize.

then check with your individual airline. If you make it past them (your Carrier's check-in) , then it has been our experience...carrying reg/computer, laptop, purse, backpack...you get some pretty stern "warnings" from the TSA-types. Watch, pick your lanes, it DOES make a difference. We slugged our way though, made it, but it wasn't pretty!

As you probably already know the weight limit for checked bags is now 50 lbs, which is very minimial for a weeklong dive trip.

It's a jungle out there!

Good luck,

Keith & Diane

Well the 1510 was WAY too small anyway. Had to go with (2) 1620 cases which are much bigger.

TSA has nothing to say about size or weight.

I am not advocating getting into any argument with them, but dimensions of carry-on bags is simply not within their training or purview.

Bags may be limited to a specific weight, but for a usual fee of $25 they will take your bags up to 70 lbs. on any leg of an international flight. Example? http://www.aa.com/content/travelInformation/baggage/baggageAllowance.jhtml?anchorEvent=false

Pelican Cases are detailed at http://www.pelican.com/case_category.php?CaseSize=%&New=% I own maybe 13 of them, heck I even sell stuff to Pelican! I love them.

the #1620 measures in at 24.81" x 19.37" x 13.87"
(internal dimensions: 21.37" x 16.31" x 12.56" without foam)

the #1510 measures 22.00" x 13.81" x 9.00"
(inside: 19.75" x 11.00" x 7.60", no foam)

Unfortunately, the #1510 is the largest allowed by the FAA for carry on. See http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1032,00.html

Continental http://www.continental.com/travel/policies/baggage/carry-on.asp?SID=794B6471B9AC476194ED9C6380D8001E uses a "total" length+width+height of 51", the #1620 adds up to 58"

You can find some good LINKS to specific airline's rules on http://www.thetravelinsider.info/travelaccessories/airlinecarryonluggageallowances.htm (otherwise their website itself is outdated)

I talked to American Airlines yesterday, flying to Cancun in Aug, and they told me 45 linear inches. Add the length, width and depth and as long as it doesn't exceed 45 your good. Now of course she added don't show up with a bag thats 2x2x41. So much for carrying on my partialy inflated safety sausage...

Continental just robot phoned me, I am flying through London airport on Friday (to the Red Sea...whooopee!)

The have a new (July 5) carry on limit of 44", strictly enforced.

All you folks paying attention to the dimensions, watch out for the weight too.
If you fill up any of the bags you're talking about, they'll way much more than is allowed. They're weighing carryon bags now at checkin and at the gate (more so with non-US carriers on international flights from the US it seems.) I've had my carrons weighed at LAX on my last couple international trips by the airline check in counter. And you can't just pay if that one is overweight. Big nuisance.
