Looking at Google Maps sat view, there are a number of what look like lagoons and inshore areas protected by an outer bank. Are any of these worth snorkeling/diving?

All along the southern coastline, from East to West (but mostly West) there are amazing yet secluded beaches that are perfect for diving and snorkeling. The extreme East/West locations plus North side should be avoided due to iron shore entries/exits plus unknown currents.

The San Juan area... is a great example of secluded beaches ideal for diving and snorkeling!

Hope this helps...

Kharon, what is your preferred departure airport? I know NYC is out for you (we get nonstop flights out of NYC to CUR for under $400. I see Burlington to CUR $513 or so on JB.

These are the areas (inside the breakwater wall that I'm curious about. Are they deep enough to snorkel/dive?

I fly out of Albany, NY. I know it looks cheaper to fly from Newark/JFK. or some other "nearby" airport but by the time you add in gas, tolls, hotel, and parking there's not much, if any difference. So it's usually not worth the aggravation.

Since I'm going alone, the cost of the flight didn't used to be a deterrant. Now the fares have doubled or more and the travel times, at least on one, sometimes both directions, have become unbearable. If I lived in Huston ... But then I wouldn't ever. lol

As to your $400 direct flights out of NYC??? I can't find them

. Look on Jet Blue. Flights Wed/Wed usually cheaper than Sat - Sat. They are running a sale now on CUR and saw $309 Wed-Wed last week in May. Their lowest rate does not include checked bag. With a checked bag it is around $350.

Unfortunately, the top 2 maps are from Eastpoint which is private property and only accessible by boat. Certainly suitable for diving, but be aware that due to the lack of moorings in these areas, all diving is drift diving and not suitable for snorkeling due to the heavy surge. The upside with Eastpoint (Oospunt) is the reef is incredibly healthy and from a scientific perspective, researchers have described this area as one of the last pristine habitats in the Caribbean!

On the other hand, the last/bottom picture is the area around Fuikbaai. Once again only accessible by boat and not really familiar with any one snorkeling this area... but the diving is awesome!

Hope this answers your questions! If not, please let me know!! Always happy to help!!

I think you are looking at one way fares. I just looked and any booking for a 7 day stay is $600+ and only leaves from JFK. Out of Newark & LaGuardia Jet blue only flies to Aruba. Even the best long term stay fare is still $459 round trip + $100 for a checked bag = $559 plus the cost of the trip to and from JFK. Oh, and flying out of JFK (or LaGuardia, for that matter, sux even worse then Newark)

Thanks for the clarification. On the satelite view it looked like there were roads/trails running right to the lagoon. Inside the break wall I wouldn't be concerned about current because ther can be none. But if it's all private it's a no go.

Looking out in May when I usually travel:

I prefer Newark as parking lots are dirt cheap! And the time to get there is more reliable, but those prices certainly get my attention...
