We have 4 days on the ground to work with in the 3rd week of October. My husband and son (age 20) have about 20 dives, I've non beyond my open water cert. We will have one non-diver, but eager to try resort dives guest with us. All strong swimmers with great water comfort. With that make up and a desire to see the biggest sea life we can, where would you recommend we base ourselves? Some dive operators have told me that they can give us our own group guide and take us to all of the La Paz sites, but I'm a bit skeptical of that. We also don't want to dive every day (this is why we are slow to get our dive count up) as we enjoy snorkeling just as much. Any help appreciated on locations or dive operators. Thanks.

Hello, maybe as you guys have few days only and rely upon the amount of business, probably you should base at Cabo San Lucas. For sure somebody is gonna need your services. As for us being full by the moment, probably by those dates we will be needing a hand with some tours. Also if you bring us customers you receive for sure a comission on it. Take a look on our divesite and stay in touch. We have experience on conducting la paz trip as pulmo. It is likely that if you guys want to go diving there you would have to pay the trip. Since the both places are far away, and the spots at La Paz are farther out too, the chances to go for free are less than a few, unless you join a pretty big group. Anyway we do have good packages to go there, and I you send us at least 4 divers to go there, we could arrange for your spot for free.

if you don't want to dive every day, then stay either in san jose, or in cabo san lucas. the day trip to cabo pulmo is easily done, there is a 90 minute drive there, but nothing big about it. for the non certified, try to get them certified before they come, because if you want to all go together, then you will be limited to 40 feet, and at cabo pulmo, the better sites are to 60 feet. not the place for a non certified. the non certified can also do the theory and shallow water skills at home, then come to cabo to do the 4 open water dives. do open water 1 and 2 in cabo (max 40 feet), then all go to cabo pulmo where they complete 3 and 4 (max 60 feet) to get certified.
october is the best month for cabo pulmo, the water will be mid 80's, and the fish life will be everywhere, in fact, the whole region is great in october. we conduct private cabo pulmo trips with minimum 2 people, out of cabo san lucas and san jose. its a hot day, but well worth the diving.

We have just booked a trip from SFO to SJD where we plan on picking up a car and doing the Baja Sur Loop. We will drive from the airport to La Paz on the first day. Dive day 2 & 3 in La Paz. We will stay in a cheap motel. On day 3 we will drive to Cabo Pulmo and dive day 4 & 5. On day 6 we will drive back to the airport. We haven't picked a Dive Op yet in either location. I'd appreciate any info you come across that doesn't need tour ops from Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo

The advice about staying in Cabo is probably good. I spent four winters working as a marine biologist/underwater videographer in the Sea of Cortez south To Cabo and then up the Pacific Coast to Magdalena Bay. I enjoyed the diving in the offshore islands around La Paz and Loreto. Cabo diving is probably easier though and you have the option of going to Cabo Pulmo (which we never dove).

Hola Beth !

My name is Thierry and I am a dive instructor, leading dive trips in Baja Sur, between Cabo Pulmo and La Paz. The trip you describe is similar to the dive trips I organize in the area and it's a great opportunity to discover the best of Baja diving.

I am based in Cabo Pulmo and I would be happy to organize your dives here. Also I can help you with lodging here in Cabo Pulmo.

In La Paz, I have a good contact of a professional dive operation who can take care of your diving and I can also recommend an unexpensive hotel in La Paz, close to the dive operation and walking distance to the beach front.

Check my web page

Looking forward hearing from you

Hi Guys, Im an experience instructor over the whole area. If you guys looking for save money and kind of look for a good operator in la paz, my advice would be to go to FUN BAJA is over the Costa Baja marina where the Fiesta Inn hotel is these guys have really good services and first class boats. Ask for Lorenzo , the manager. As you come down south the Cabo Pulmo option would be with Thierry at Cabo Pulmo . The guy that posted before me. And as you come down to Cabo San Lucas a good option would be to dive with us if you wish =D.

Let us know what your plans might be

Hello from Cabo, This is Dee owner of Baja Dive here in Cabo.I think you should Try Diving Cabo First. With a beginner Diving the walls here is going to be great we start off in shallow water 15 feet and then over to the wall top at 35 feet and if all is well down to 50 feet.
Cabo Pulmo is a drift Dive not the best for new divers trying to learn. LaPaz dive can also be hard for a new Diver. I will give you a Private Dive Master just for your group.
If you have not Dove here before your going to love it. There is over 800 species of Tropical marine Life here sometimes so many fish you cant see the other Divers.
October is a great time to Dive here water will be 85 degrees and vis will be 80 to100 feet.
We Dive on our 40 foot boat that has full hard top for lots of shade and a wide beam for a very stable Ride and a stable Dive platform.
Wehave been serving Divers to Cabo from our current location since 1996 and have never had a diving accident.
We offer all Scuba Board menbers a 20% Discount this beats all Dive discounts offered in Cabo.
Please let me know if you need any Info. about Diving here or anything about Cabo.
Thanks Dee

Hello,
I'm planning a vacation that is going to end up in Baja January 1-5, 2017
I was interested in diving with those cute little sea lions. Does anyone know how the diving is that time of year? I know its going to be cold water, but wasn't planning on this vaca to be all about diving. Is it possible to snorkel with the whale sharks? Fishing trip? What can we expect?
Thanks!
Jodi

Hey Jodi,
Here in La Paz in January you can expect cooler conditions and less visibility than in the fall but the marine life is just as good. The sea lions are here year round and the whale sharks can be regularly spotted from Sep-March and all operators have daily whale shark tours or diving/whale shark combos.
Most tourists dive in a 5mm long wet suit and are comfortable with the temperature in January.
Fishing I don't know much about...sorry
pm me if you have any more questions, I work here in La Paz year round.
