Scuba diver dies in hospital after being rescued - San Diego, California News Station - KFMB Channel 8 - cbs8.com
LA JOLLA (CNS/CBS 8) - An unconscious scuba diver was pulled from the ocean Saturday during a group outing near La Jolla Shores, lifeguard officials said.
Lifeguards were alerted to the diver, believed to be in his mid- to late-40s, who was reportedly having difficulty about 8:30 a.m., according to city lifeguard Lt. John Everhart. The diver was in "very serious medical condition," when lifeguards and his fellow divers brought him to shore where lifeguards began CPR, Everhart said.
The diver had some type of medical issue, Everhart said, adding he was unsure if it was related to the dive or it was an unrelated medical issue.
The diver was then taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Everhart said.
News 8 has learned the man later died at the hospital. The cause of his death is still unknown.

Very sad. It was Dive#1 of his OW certification from what I understand....

Very sad indeed.

Very sad indeed. I have no idea what happened in this instance, but I have numerous times had students lie to me on their medical declarations, not mentioning serious conditions that impacted directly on their ability to dive. I'm not sure the "self certification" system works.

Several other news articles have showed up, some saying he was in his 40s, mid 40s, 50. Some say he was pulled from the water unconscious, some say he had problems once on the boat and was taken to shore where lifeguards joined in.

The news report that was posted here is pretty accurate. OW dive 1. Current SPECULATION: heart attack

Wow, how sad!! Guy trys to do something he obviously shows interest in & first dive, done..
Bad situation, hope we hear what sort of pre-excisting "medical condition" he had or if he did, that may have caused this.
Thats my lds where I got certified & involved in their dive club, see Werner "owner" re-assuring that this was not dive related...
O.E. probably does the most certifications in the S.D. area compared to other lds's in the area.

You have to wonder (hope?) that this condition was something the diver was unaware of as well. I've often wondered about people who are so determined to dive that they fail to self-report on their releases (not saying this is the case here or not- I have absolutely no way to know). Not much an LDS can do to protect a diver from himself should he chose to ignore known conditions. I had no choice: my doctor dives with my LDS.

I did my OW cert at La Jolla Shores. Wow. Quite sad.
