Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and thank some apprentice divers diving at Ginnie last night. These guys were pro's, one in SM, one in BM, with o2 that they left staged at the steps. Their diving looked flawless, with good ascent rates and trim.

Their actions that deserve special commendation? They went above and beyond the call of duty, helping an open water diver in an aluminum 80 and yoke reg sneak in to Devil's Eye for a galaxy dive. It's not clear if they were good enough to take him into the daytime cave zone, but they atleast showed him far enough back in the system to make it impossible to see their lights from the Eye side stairs. Not only did they give the sneak diver a tour of what good cave diving looks like, they also did a small Galaxy dive. It is commendable that they took the time to show an open water diver what cave diving is really all about.

They were even polite to Ginnie staff when questioned. They gladly shared their air pressures and dive computers to show that they hadn't kept the open water diver down for "too long."

:shakehead:

(What is the first rule of cave diving? What would their cave instructor think? What would you think of their cave instructor? Is it any wonder that OW divers are dying in caves when almost-there-cave divers are taking them on VIP tours? What happens when the OW diver is alone and feels that, since he's already been in the system once, he can go in by himself or with another OW diver, and he gets into trouble? Is taking an OW diver into a cave any different from an intro diver diving 6ths, or a cave diver visualing a jump? Am I a bad person for putting this story on the internet? :) )

*Whew* You had me worried for a minute...

I hope they were banned from Ginnie.

I believe the appropriate action is a slap on the wrist. I think that's what happened to an instructor who took OW rebreather divers into a cave who later died in that same cave on a return visit.

IMO however, Ginnie is making their own bed with this one. It's OK to dive the ballroom to 100ft penetration without OW training, but not devils? It's OK to dive Paradise, Blue Grotto and Vortex, but not V. Blue Springs? I've come to the conclusion that "open water safe" means you can charge an entry fee greater than $30.

you forgot the part where they asked you if you could hand them their beers...

They snuck in around 1am, only Ginnie staff at that point is Dave. Dave is a nice guy, but hes not the kind of person who completely understands the differences between the levels of cave training, or cares. Furthermore, he doesn't have the authority to do much to the people.

They were in wetsuits, it was 50* out, and the OW guy walked a quarter of a mile to sneak in....and they didn't dive after the beers were passed down...

I'd really like to find out who they were, so I could speak to their instructors.

SM guy had some 85's or 104s, PST's or OMS. Yellow deco 40 with a big...I think IANTD sticker, but I could be wrong. Green/dark blue or something. BM guy I believe also had PST or OMS tanks, not sure on size, Scubapro wetsuit... OW guy looked a little like he might be using a Ginnie rental tank and reg, but I'm not sure. Unfortunately, I didn't and don't have the authority to acquire anymore information about them. However, I feel that their cave instructor should know the reputation they are getting, and be forewarned that it is now common knowledge that he teaches people to have little respect for the dangers of a cave. I know when rumors go around about me, I get a call from my instructor, and he asks me what's up, and I get scolded if I did anything wrong.

Ive been a diver for 30 years commercial, rec tech and experimental gear. I was born in central florida so i can say ive dove most springs at 1 time or another. Here is what i have to say about that thread. STUPID. Pleanty of divers, especially pioneers have already made the mistakes and died making it safer for us. So why go and do something stupid like this? I admit i entered the cave systems before i was certified, but it was 30 years ago when training was more optional than the rule and looking back on it i would never take an untrained diver in there, ever. Infact it was around 1979 when i took a confined space course then onto cave diving courses.
I have personaly been on my exit from the eye and seen single tank OW divers slipping in, funny how shaking your finger in a no no fashion makes them snap back to reality and back out. I love my Florida and its diving options, if you do too then its your duty to watch for these things and help stop it before some fool dies again un trained and the state starts locking down these dive spots. To the newbies who did this, go dive some where else, we dont want you diving in our caves, find a lake or a pool to impress your friends in preferrably outside of Florida. I wish Id been there, then again maybe i dont

if your not cave trianed DONR EVEN GO TO THE ENTRANC EOF THE CAVE , STUPID STUPID
