unless the strap is an "easy break" version that makes the gauge disposable.

I tended to keep it in my pocket on dives when I wasn't planning on needing to be navigating [e.g. wreck dives], or very cautious of it on 'dinner' dives... A little more of an issue for me than the majority, since I wear it on my left arm and I'm left handed... but hole burrowing was done with my right hand, and the compass just made me insure that if I lose my hand, I lose the non dominent one ;)

Now that I have bungie straps on my compass and depth gauge, I don't concern myself as much, as I'm sure I can tug it off.
