I'm going to be donating a kidney to my daughter next month. Can anyone think of a reason why this would keep me from diving? After the incision heals up of course. I'll consult a dive doctor in my area, but was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.
I really hope not because Make-a-wish is sending us to Australia after her transplant and I would hate to go all that way and not dive the reef. :)

I can't imagine any reason why not. However, I am no doc. I really only wanted to comment on what a great thing you are doing :) How exciting to be able to do something so wonderful. I once helped a boy w/ cancer find a marrow donor. He has since grown up to be a strong young man. Just doing that itsy bit was so gratifying. I couldn't imagine actually donating something from my physical body to save one's life. Kudo's to you.

Assuming no complications from the surgery and adequate healing time, and that the function of the other kidney was normal (which it should be, or they wouldn't consider taking the other one), there should be no problem. People survive on one kidney quite nicely -- Some people are actually born with only one.

Wonderful thing you are doing. Best wishes on the surgeries and for a speedy recovery to both of you. Keep us posted.

Good luck to you both. Make sure to schedule the trip with a few months' recovery in mind. :)
