i was wondering how far the kelp bed is from the shore in laguna beach. i checked out laguna sea sports web site and showed that theres a kelp bed between sleep hallow and moss st. i was wondering if anyone has dove there. thanks.

Hi Bruce,

Historically, there have been a few different places off OC that have featured giant kelp but they are not there right now, AFAIK.

A friend of mine, Nancy Caruso of CA Coastkeeper Alliance, has been managing the kelp reforestation project for OC for the past 4 years. She told me a few months ago that aerial photos showed it had all but disappeared.

Although there is some kelp in a few places, the gorgeous canopies that most of us think of when we think of kelp are gone for now.

It is coming back at Catalina, though!

nice reply Debbie, you stated the Kelp situation in Orange county much more diplomatically than I would have. :)

In addition to the channel islands, the kelp off point loma in san diego is amazing. There is also kelp off the shore at malaga cove in palos verdes, and all through Malibu. and even a little bit at the 120 reef at Marineland.

The kelp shot from my homepage (www.ladiving.org) was shot in Malibu, just near the ventura county border, about 2 months ago. Its some of the nicest kelp I've ever seen!

good luck in your quest for Kelp bruce.

Scott

So, it sounds like LA County is the place to go for giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) if we want to see it on a beach dive. I think San Diego's Point Loma kelp is only accessible from a boat, correct?

This is embarrassing but I still have never done an LA County beach dive with the exception of Casino Point. I need to fix that!!

Does all this help you out, Bruce?

la jolla cove in san diego, malaga cove in PV, and malibu are all good choices

ps - I won't comment on you calling casino point a beach dive, its been discussed before :)

there is tons of kelp off of san pedro/palos verdes throughout the coast. i have some aerial shots of it but it is much to late too late tonight to post them. unfortunately most of the area there is pretty hard to get to with the exception of white point. I will check wednesday when i am flying (aka at work) out there and see what is going on at marineland. also the western side of PV is good, and Malaga cove is normally filled with the stuff.

ps hello debbie!
