Staying at the Grand Hyatt
VERY NICE, I'll be there the 5th to the 10th.
That being the case you could make due with taxis if you don't want to do anything off resort other than dive since most of the diving is on that end.

Aloha, pharpe.

If you want to see the whole island, I definitely recommend renting a car - at least for a day or two. Everything here is pretty spread out and there is not a whole lot w/in walking distance of your hotel, although the hotel is a huge, beautiful complex that you pretty much don't even have to leave if you don't want to. But to see the north shore, the west side and Waimea Canyon, a car will be a must.

Oside Jimc has it right though - all the best diving will pretty much be on the south shore of the island, just car minutes from your hotel. Koloa Landing is probably 5 minutes away and again, I would agree w/Oside Jimc - it is a great dive to start off with. Very easy dive but by no means boring. I recommend booking your shore dive first and then following it up w/your boat dives.

BTW, our dive shop teaches scuba at the Grand Hyatt so if you guys dive with us and your newly-certified girlfriend (congratulations!) would like a complimentary refresher, come on down to the salt water lagoon the day before your scheduled dive! Let me know if I can be of further assistance to you in your dive preparations...happy diving to you!

Sorry, got another non scuba question. We would like to do a site seeing excursion. I saw a dinner sailing trip off of Na Pali by Capt Andy’s. Has one done something like this? Looking for any opinions /suggestions.

Last time I was on Kauai we did a Na Pali coast trip. While we did not get sick 80% of the boat did, not very festive watching a bunch of people vomit non-stop for several hours, it can get pretty rough up there that time of year.
If you have a car and are reasonable athletic the hike to Hanakapi'ai beach on the Kalalau trail (then up to Hanakapi'ai falls) is a great way to spend a day, of course everybody's tastes are different. I great resource for planning is "Kauai Revealed" by wizard publications.

I love the Capt. Andy's dinner sailing trip off of the NaPali but I guess I am one of the lucky ones - I've been out 6-7 times on their catamaran cruises and only witnessed one person getting sick and I quickly looked away as they were escorted to the far end of the boat.

Here is what I would recommend...if there are no significant northwest swells that week then personally, I would go. If there are big swells, chances are that you might encounter people getting seasick. Does that help?

Also - that hike is AMAZING and is probably one of the best ways to see the NaPali Coast. It seems like it is uphill both ways at times but the vistas are well worth it. It is a bit rugged and you'll definitely want to bring water, some snacks, and wear your bathing suit under casual clothing that can get completely ruined by red dirt, good hiking shoes, sunscreen and a hat.

In all fairness to Capt Andy we did not go on his cruise, it was one arranged by the Hyatt so perhaps we were on aa smaller boat, or just had an xtra wimpy load of passengers (very possible since 1 guy was hurling as we were clearing the harbor, he had a looooong day).

Wow. Yep, that looks rugged. I've done it when it was muddy like that and boy, you look a lot cleaner than I did! :OP And, I don't think I've ever burned so many calories in my life! What a hike. Much easier when it is dry, that is for sure. But either way, the views are spectacular and as you said, an amazing experience.

Just picked up a copy of Kauai Revealed. That hike sounds great. I'm getting pretty excited about the trip. Just a few more weeks.

Any one heading to Kauai in Dec? I'll be on Kauai Dec 14th - Dec 20th. Would difenitly like to dive Koloa Landing.
