Good points Rick and Andy.

Got a message from eanxgirl, she lives near Meridian, MS and she's ok, just no power.

I've been watching the coverage and hate the feeling of being so helpless. When I bought groceries today I contributed to the grocery stores' fundraiser. Hopefully the money will get to the people who need it. Other than donating cash i was trying to think of something else I could do. I have tons of clothes that my son and daughter have grown out of the past two years. I don't know why I hang on to this stuff, but with the recent move I have it packed up at my parents' house waiting for the day I can have a yard sale to make money for a dive trip. :D Instead I'm going to take the clothes to the Salvation Army and hope that they get to the Gulf Coast to the kids that could use them. Just an idea for other moms out there who are on a tight budget like me but want to help.

Here is a link recently posted by MoveOn.org to post living/housing for victims of Katrina. They are launching an emergency national housing drive to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) and search for available housing online at:

http://www.hurricanehousing.org

But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need, so please offer what you can.

The process is simple:

You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. We'll do everything we can to get your offers where they are needed most. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on.

I'm driving up to Fort Benning to see my youngest son off to Iraq this weekend. This is a military family. #'s people. This government doesnt have them right. You need the right # to get the job done. If you are going to do something then damnit do it. That way you SAVE lives and $$$. I'm simply sorry to see the tax $$$ I pay, and the souls THIS family puts into the national budget, to do what WE as a collective people want done NOT go by the numbers.

We are talking crisis. Forget the place. Lets talk about PEOPLE'S LIVES. It aint getting done. Our greatest military leaders said put more people into our international offensive military effort. We fluffed that one. Big time. Do some research.

OK here's another chance. We have a lot of people that SURVIVED possibly the greatest tradegy this country has seen in its history. Forget the ones that have been resuced. People are dieing of exposure on park benches. And we could put this behind us like a cake walk. Will we do it. We can.

I'm watching. And I am simply not impressed.

I can offer a job in Memphis to a refugee from Mississippi, Alabama or Louisiana. We're an internet company and can use help in our warehouse which could lead to a management position. I'm posting here because I would prefer a referral from someone who knows someone in need. May be able to help with locating housing here. PM me if you can recommend someone who has lost their home and wants a new start.

QUOTE "our government (that is, us) is already helping a great deal,
as Rick says."
I strongly disagree!
And so does "New Orleans' top emergency management official" who "called that effort a "national disgrace" and questioned when reinforcements would actually reach the increasingly lawless city." http://www.nola.com/newsflash/weath...l-50/1125576848107391.xml&storylist=hurricane
Rick Perry, a real Texan, http://www.governor.state.tx.us/about appears to be doing far more in a leadership role http://www.governor.state.tx.us/ than Bush born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html.

it's hard to appreciate the effort when you're on the ground sweating it out.
let me tell you this: it'd be a LOT worse without the help that's already there.

already LaPlace has been made into a staging area, and New Orleans is next.
it takes time to move people into safe positions. everything is in motion,
it's just a matter of time before it all clicks. sorry, we are human, and we
can't bend the rules of time.

don't take a crap on these guys and the job they are doing. no one was prepared
for this, and they're doing the best they can with what they have

and to those guys on the ground pulling people off roofs and putting their
lives on the line, i say "you guys are heroes"

We "our government (that is, us)" knew that this was going to be a catastrophe, not a normal really bad hurricane, and We "our government (that is, us)" did almost nothing, in comparison to what needed to be done, to prepare for this. It still amazes me how unprepared We "our government (that is, us)" choose to be.

someone has an axe to grind...

sadly, you are grinding it over the human suffering of quite a lot of people
