In my back yard for 4 weeks and counting now.... this week is so bad it's driving me out of Lovers Key and up into town where the offshore breeze is keeping the air clear enough to take a breath without coughing or having the itching feel in your throat.
How bad is it this year? Well, the Department of Agriculture is out putting up signs at all the beach parking areas, motels, resorts, etc., saying "Do no eat the shell fish" which filter out the toxins from the water thus becoming toxic themselves. The fact its illegal to 'clam' and such here is beside the point, the tourists don't know/care.
We should make K.brevis the state algae! Then it'll be official that we have a problem with it and that as humans with a need to fertilize grass to grow on sand, we're willing to grow the nasty results to. However, this 'can't be proven' so its not allowed to be talked about.
But there's more: http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060720/NEWS0105/607200381/1075
Anyway.. thats the long and short of my rant... I've been off island now 6 hours and and just starting to get the itching in my throat to go away and sinuses to stop draining... For those who this bloom doesn't have any effect (physically or geologically) ye be lucky!
