Hi all,

I just recently moved to Hawaii, (Island of Oahu) in February 2008. Prior to coming here I did a lot of searching on the net and found a lot of queries from people who we’re interested in moving to Hawaii or were going to be moving here and had a lot of questions. I saw a lot of questions but few answers.

Since that was the case I decided that if we made the move I would offer information on my experience to any who were interested and before it fades from my easily overwritten memory.

So if you have any questions I’ll try my best to answer them. Here are some fast facts to give you a better idea of what kind of questions to ask or not ask, (like don’t bother asking about schools as I have no kids here):

Martial Status: Married
Children: None (step children but they are adults)
Age: mid-forties
Prior location: California
Certs: PADI Rescue diver, wife PADI BOW
Profession: Information Technology
Pets: Dog (Shi Tzu) brought her with us. Marine aquarium in CA (not setup in Hawaii - they wouldn't allow many of my existing animals)
Prior Hawaii Exposure: Vacationed in Maui once
Most of our/my diving has been Laskes (Amistead in Texas) off the California coast or on annual trips ot Cozumel. We have only made about 5 dives here in Hawaii.

I’m not going to answer salary specifics questions, (will give you percentages if known) or employer specific questions as I have to make sure I don’t violate any company policies etc. So your best bet is to avoid the job specific stuff and stick to generalities relating to employment/salary.

Synopsis

I work for a company that had a contract in California that was coming to an end. One of the choices I had was to look at various opening they had available and apply for any I was interested in. I applied for various positions from the East coast to the West coast including Hawaii (which was not our first choice). I received a call from the hiring manager for Hawaii in December 2007. After talking to him he asked my wife and I to fly out so we could check things out and for a more in-depth interview. Based on our previous experiencing in Hawaii (Maui) living in Hawaii wasn’t our first choice, but we thought what the heck it can’t hurt to take a look. We flew out here and we immediately fell in love with Oahu, (although we didn’t really care for Maui when we vacationed there). I started work here in Oahu in February 2008. My wife stayed in California to sell our house and wait for our dog to finish her quarantine. She and the dog arrived in May 2008.

Currently we are renting in a town called Kaneohe on the windward side of Oahu and are looking to buy (if we can ever find something we can afford). I have a 25-30 minute commute to work depending on traffic.

That should give you enough info to get started. You can send me a private e-mail, but I would prefer if you keep in on the forum so everyone can benefit.

Aloha

Welcome to the board.

Sounds like you will have a great time working there.

You might want to move a tad south on the board and post again under United States Hawaii O'Hanna http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/hawaii-ohana/ as the introductions and greets are not read by all and due to the traffic your post will move off the first page rather quickly. On the Hawaii page your information would tend to stay more in the forefront and it is a place people looking to go to Hawaii will search.

I myself have only been to Hawaii once for 25 days and that was to the Island of Hawaii. 20 days at Pacaloa Training area in the middle of the island and then 3 days sightseeing with some friends who had moved there, then off to Honolulu where I planed to spend 3 days, saw the island the day I landed (the Mighty Mo was being towed into the harbor as we landed) and could not wait to get out of there. Flew out the next day. I hear some of the other islands are great.
