My buddy just went over to the local FAA field office for an airfield pass so he can drive on and get to his airplane. He is wearing his military uniform so the FAA rep. looks at his name and holds up a file and says "Is this you?". My pal says yes and gets a access pass to the airport hangars and flightline, NO ID check, no questions, no nothing.

At least they check Grandma and the little ones for bombs in their shoes!

Depends on the airport, size and location. Seems like you're talking about the general aviation area of the airport.

Our GA mixes on one side with commercial and no barrier exists between the two.

I fly abit and I have to agree with Inspector 2. Most airports do not separate GA from commercial areas including some of the major airports such as GEG in Spokane. The best access to most Airports by an unsavory character would be by small plane. Take off of a private feild land at a commercial airport unload your supplies and go for it. Kind of scary too eh.

I will use Tampa Intl as an example since I work there.....GA and commercial are on opposite ends of the airside. To walk from one to the other would mean crossing an active runway (18L) and several taxi ways, GC would see you as well as taxiing aircraft, service vehicles, security and the tower.

If you fly in to GA you are monitored until you reach your tie down. They want the $ for landing and parking fees.

Keep in mind this is a large airport and has more security measures than most which means there is more to be done, right?

I personally check grandpa, grandma, dad, mom, kids and the pets plus all the bags period. If most people think about it the alternative to being in a flaming, disintegrating aircraft at 32,000 due to an IED or whatever is to undergo a baggage and personal/carry on screening before boarding.
