You'll be surprised at how well all that effort permanently drills the procedures into your brain. I didn't appreciate how well my Rescue instructor did that for our class until I had to repeat Rescue 7 for the DM course.

It gets easier with more diving experience also... in fact, diving experience will improve your ability to respond to a rescue scenario more than will more gym experience.

And Max is right: the open water rescue exercises and scenarios (for PADI, at least) are supposed to be done over at least two days. If you did them all in one day... hmmm... no surprise you're wiped out.
 
Congratulations!
The Rescue Course is one of the most beneficial courses a diver can participate in. IMO
Along with the techniques to perform various rescues, it can teach or stretch divers to find their limits and a few things about themselves.
As an Instructor I enjoy watching the different personalities, limits found and the self confidence build.
