Hey,

I just went ahead and bought my first reg setup, ATX200 w/ ATX50. I bought it at SimplyScuba for about $565 which included shipping. I was surprised that this was actually cheaper than the ATX200 w/ TX40 octo on DiveInn.
When I get the regs, is there anything I need to do to them besides attach the hoses up? What do I need to check on them before I actually dive with them? Should I take them to an LDS for inspection? I haven't established a rapport with an LDS yet since I'm new to the area, but are they going to be pissed that I bought them online (I saved about $300). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thomas

it couldnt hurt to have the LDS check it out.

They can check your IP and make sure its set properly and the 2nd stages are in good working order too.

Andy

they only know you bought it online if you tell them you did.

You could take it to the LDS but like Pug said, they may not be happy but who cares. I bought an ATX40 backup from Simply Scuba and didn't take it into the LDS before diving it. It worked flawlessly and I had no freeflow problems. Then again a buddy of mine bought the ATX50/ATX40 reg set from DiveInn and had freeflow problems with it even after bringing it into the LDS for service two or three times. One thing you can do which is what I did when I got mine before diving it was hook up the hoses and put the reg on a tank and turn on the air. Then fill a 5 gallon bucket up with cold water and submerge the second stages in the water and see if you get any free flows.

I would sugest you test out new equipment in a controlled environment before doing any serious diving.

I always do check out dive with new gear. I usually jump into a friends pool and test it out before going to all the trouble of traveling to a dive site only to find out its not working right. You could do the ocean or fresh water to test it as well, just be smart about the conditions and limit your depth.

just a side note on the LDS being unhappy, if they give you shiat about it or even some attitude, your shoping at the wrong LDS. I wouldnt go in the shop and tell them i got it online, thats just not the way to develop a rappor (sp) with the shop. There are too many shops in my area, if im not happy with a shop i move to the next. Eventually you will find a shop that cares and makes you feel welcome there.

Andy

No Dive shop worth a turkey should care. From your post it seems that you haven't established a relationship with them, and since you're obviously not a new diver (at least to them), you had to get your gear somewhere before coming to them. I say what better way to start a relationship with a shop than getting your reg checked. I'm sure you'll buy a few toys from them before you leave. :) God knows I do!

P.S. Are you a D&D fan. Or is that something you want the rest of the board to know? ;)

Thanks...Actually, the LDS I just bought my Pioneer 27 lb wing from has a guy in it that taught my OW/AOW NAUI class down in Williamsburg while I was at school. They seem pretty cool, and hell, they carry Halcyon gear, as well as being a Sea-Quest dealer. So I might go there to get it checked out. I have to wait a couple of weeks anyway, b/c SimplyScuba just said the ATX50 is out of stock, and will be in next week.

I used to read Forgotton Realms books in which Drizzt was the character. When I played competitive Laser Tag (don't laugh), that was my code name for 4 years, so that is how all my friends got to know me. Thanks for your help.

I have a friend in Georgetown Med... He'd be in his 2nd or 3rd year now. Keith is his name =)
