Well we just returned from what was supposed to be a 7 day stay that turned into a 9day stay in beautiful Kona Hawaii. The house was the most fantastic oasis for my family including my very sick three year old boy. 38 steps (I counted) to rent kayaks for a quick paddle over to Cooks Monument for some outstanding snorkeling. Ocean view and georgous home. Due to my own ears and my sons fever we didnt get to dive untill...... the airline delayed our flight to some lame reason(aloha airlines) but did let us delay our flight for 2 days free of charge. and on the 2nd saturday we did one mellow dive next to Place of Refuge otherwise known as 2 step. And got to snorkel with a pod of wild dolphins about 18-20 with babys and they swam around for about 40 minutes no fancy shows just the best thing I ever experienced in or out of the water!!!
The last 3 days we stayed was at Kona Bali Kai the most overpriced sorry excuse for a so called resort the only good things about the whole place was the turtle action in the tide pools and Millers snorkel rentals
Snorkel Bob sucked they treated our new snorkelers like idiots with no tact for understanding some ones aprehension to the activity the first time around
and Millers snorkel was cheaper nicer and had more aloha!!
Huggos is some of the best food Ive ever eaten and the ocean view and eel action was outstanding.
Over all I really liked this Island and will most likely return some time soon!!

Humdiver, hope your son is better...
I ditto Huggo's food! We have lots of good food in Honolulu and Socal also, but I rave about Huggo's all the time. Wish they got written up more because that place is pretty darn close to perfect. The tables above the surf, the piano, the service, glad to hear somebody else enjoyed it so much.

You guys are so right about Huggo's. But have you tried Huggo's on the Rocks for coffee and breakfast? Sitting out, drinking the best dang coffee ever (at $40 a pound it should be) and watching the dolphins jumping! Man, I can't wait to go back in Feb. We also are renting a house in KK Bay and plan to have many cocktails on our kayaks at sunset! Now that's living!

Susie, when you come out, you should stock up on Nicky's Beans, about 17. 00 a bag at Costco here. It is 100% Kona, not a blend. I love it so much, I grind it and take it on trips. Sounds like you all have the "great living" thing down! But thats the way Marin people are...

Catherine,
Thanks so much for the tip! I will check out the beans! But I think you folks in the islands have the "good living" thing down to perfection! Are you working as a DM?
DM'ing here on on the No. Coast of CA is way different than over there, I am sure! At least you can see your students underwater!
Happy Bubbles

Okay did anyone check out my question about "eels out of water"?? did anyone else see eels out wandering the rocks below Huggos or was that just me??
Also have to turn you on the THE BEST house in Kealakekua Bay go to alohahouse.com and see the best price, best accomodations and the location worked great for a country family. And I forgot to mention that Kona Boys rock they truly have that Aloha stuff down!!

Hey Hum,

Can't say I saw any eels out of the water in Kona...Saw it in Catalina a couple of times.
And you are so right about The Kona Boys...they are soooooo nice. We plan on renting our kayaks from them while we are there!

Keep on diving,
Susie

That's actually a regular thing at Huggos .. usually they throw the crab and lobster shells out onto the rocks to bring in the eels. Totally cool thing to see these "snakes" out on the rocks almost completely out of the water.

When I went to that site, it was for a B & B on Maui--did I type wrong?

later edit: I tried www.alohahouse.net & got the house at Kealakekua Bay. It looks nice--I may have to check it out when we plan a Big Island family vacation.
