Thinking about heading down for a couple of drift dives. Anyone know if the Starfish is still running, and what the reefs/vis is like down there since the storm(s)?

Would love to h00k up with a SB buddy, since I'm solo if anyone's interested

Great to hear from you Krista...

Actually, the Starfish runs out of Lantana. That's a few miles closer to you. Could be a toss up between Lantana or Jupiter. It's about a 20 mile difference either way.

For me, it would probably have to be afternoon dives since it's a long drive.

If it's Jupiter, then the Temptation ( http://www.jupiterdivecharters.com )is a great outfit. For Lantana, the only operation I've ever used was Capt. Craig on the Starfish Enterprise ( http://www.idivestarfish.com ).

What to expect on the dive from either site would be inward facing ledges with profiles from 2' to 8' depending on where you are. Tons of fish, corals, and the occasional shark. There was a sighting of a whale shark earlier this year, but I wouldn't bet on ever seeing one there. They're easy dives, usually pretty good vis depending on the tide and storms. Jump in, dive down to the ledges, get neutral, and enjoy the ride. Current typically ranges from 1 to 2.5kt so it's not like being on the Dwayne or Eagle. There are also some very nice wrecks there, but it depends on what the group and captain decide to dive on. If it's a fast current, and low vis, he'll probably suggest a drift. If it's slow and clear, the wrecks are great.

KBeck:
I think I can hook up with ya--I haven't ever dived Jupiter, so it'll be interesting.
Things are still getting back to normal, but haven't been out since the storm to know visibility. Suffice it to say, it probably won't be great, but, hey....
Where exactly is the Starfish out of?

Well, with the proximity of the Halloween Dive at Ginnie Springs, I'm not going to Jupiter for this weekend. Maybe in November.
