Papa Hogs is right across the street, along with Dive Paradise I think? Who uses the dock to the north of PH?

Most likely will go with Dive with Martin again or a small op in town. We'd actually like to rent tanks somewhere and go do a shore dive on our own for my check out dive. I get nervous after not being in the water for a long time. Any suggestions on where to rent tanks?

Hi There,
Im heading to Cozumel from 22nd July - 30th. All the way from New Zealands COLD waters - my head is exploding at the idea of such warm water to dive in! :D
I havent yet booked any accomodation because I would rather sort diving first - then get my room to suit where the dive base is - priorities right!? Im a 30y/o advanced open water diver. Would LOVE some guidance as to a good group to go with...
Key points are : safe reliable gear hire
Good guides and boats to get to great dive spots
I am a little anxious about being buddied up with a beginner level diver, as I would spend the entire day looking after them, and worrying, rather than enjoying my own dive. So a group that tends to have higher level divers aboard would be GREAT.
Any ideas?
Scuby,

Aldora comes to mind, as they tend to cater to more experienced divers. Living Underwater, BlueXTSea, Blue Angel, all good. Do know any dive shop is going to put you 1st day on a boat of the least experienced divers and see how you do. From there they will then put you on boats according to skill etc (dive ops with more than 1 boat like Papa Hogs). I always dive single and 99% of the time I can pair up with a DM and not have to worry about baby sitting someone.

You might really like Aldora as they dive big steel tanks and do loooong dives.

So does Living Underwater.

To the OP, there really is no "diving base" per se. Some resorts have their own in-house dive ops. Many dive ops will pick up from several hotels and one of the town docks. Or you can taxi to the "diving base" that is La Caleta, a funky harbor of endless dive boats, but IMO it's much more convenient (and cheaper) getting picked up in town or at a hotel dock. Therefore, I recommend that you stay either in town near the "Aldora pier" or at a hotel that has its own dock, south of town since it's harder to get picked up in the north.

I've found that if you pretend like you're your own buddy, many dive ops will let you dive with yourself. I suppose there's a problem if a single diver approaches you and asks to buddy up, but you always have the right to say no. Me, I just get on the boat and glower at everyone else, talking to myself to keep up the ruse that I already have a buddy. For some reason, no one has yet to ask me to buddy up with them :)

Love it, I am trying that in July..........! Getting my crazy look on!
