Jonathon,

Go into that restaurant and say, "kurage kudasai" and you will get some...but now let me give a word to look up in your dictionary: mazui.

Joewr

JoeWR,

At least you're not trying to get me into trouble again!!

I'll go with insipid though or maybe unwise - the others are out of context with this thread, I think!

Jonathan

Jonathon,

You could stick with "insipid" in this context...or a somewhat impolite way of saying "not delicious". More polite is "owishiku nai". But in the case of kurage, my preference is "mazui".

You do not like seafood? That is a shame...some of the best in the world is in Japan. How about shrimp? Is that off the list? If not, someday try "tendon"...it is one of my favorites. And, when Winter hits, see if you can get one of your local compatriots to take you to a shrine during snow flurries and try "amazake" (sweet sake with the lees still in it). Very "whafuu" (evocative of the spirit of Japan). The best place, in my opinion, to do that, though, is in Kyoto at the Kyomizudera...

Well, enough non-scuba stuff...get you in trouble? Never!

Joewr...henna gaijin dayo

Beiginning to wounder if you ever sleep Joewr..... Is that what happens to regulators - has Scubababy read the small print?!

Had the amazake in the place you suggested last November - very nice.

Johnathon

I was actually asked about being a moderator at about 3 o'clock in the morning so I am kinda use to the lack of sleep thing!!!

Although it was hard the next day, after 15 minutes of sleep and then sitting in a car for 3 hrs to Birmingham, looking round Dive 2001 and then another 3hr ride home....I was wiped!!!!

 Well it finally happened........

I was in a restaurant on Saturday night with a gang of local divers and the nibbles came out - pickles etc. One little dish came out with a purple mash in it and unfortunaetly I forgot Joewr's vocab lesson and had already said I'll try everything once (but maybe not bugs!) - you guessed it, jellyfish!!!

mazui does not even begin to describe it - definitely not a fan!

Jonathan

Jonoson-kun,

Ogenki desuka? Boku no bai wa ne taihen ii dayo.

Well, do not say I did not warn you! A few more avoidable goodies: ika no shiokara and natto. The former is usually consumed with beer while watching Sumo on TV ("terabi"). The latter is normally eaten cold at breakfast with a beaten raw egg topping it; it is not exactly Wheatabix!

Some things to try: chawan mushi, shabu shabu, tendon, gyudon, hiyashi soba during the summer, and those wonderful asian pears...in Japanese, "nashi"; they are best consumed on a hot summer day when they are served ice cold. Another summer item mugicha.

Well...enough for this pm. How is the sukuba (sukyuba) coming?

Joewr...thinking about some wonderful Kyoto sukiyaki.....

Joe and Jonathan...

Yesterday for lunch I had both jellyfish and chawan mushi amongst other Japanese dishes.... Yum, yum.... We have a chain of "all you can eat" Japanese restaurants here and the quality of the food is superb.... I thought of you when I was tucking into my spicy jellyfish salad :D

Sorry guys. Can't say that I'm a fan. Tried it once in a Chinese joint here in London and can quite honestly say that I haven't had anything worse. Of course I've yet to work up the courage to try Oysters though I tell everyone that the reason I won't have one is that my Libido is so hot anyway that I wouldn't want to risk overloading it.

Joewr, you haven't mentioned them but I'm sure you know about Jellyfish Lake in Palau and it's very unique denizens? I've attached a photo for your info. (WARNING: SCUBABABY - look at your own peril! Guaranteed to freak you out)

Jonathan: Good Luck with the rest of your culinary experiances in Japan and thanks to you and Joewr for the Japanses lessons.

Amoeba,

How can you swim among those without getting stung? They're everywhere!

Just add peanut butter...
