Ok, I'm a fresh water diver. I've been in warm water once and am going to Phuket.

So here's the situation. I am allergic to bee stings. I get shortness of breath and a fast thumping heart beat. Then I swell like a ballon. Usually taking a hit of albuterol, I have minor asthma too, will take care of the immediate reactions. However, if I get hit by more than one sting, I'm headed for the emergency room.

Now, since I'm going to be diving in warm water and not wearing a full body suit, hood, and gloves. I'm wondering is the Jelly sting like a bee sting? Will it affect me in the same way?

If so, is there something I can carry onto the boat just in case it's needed?

I know vinegar or urine will take care of the stinging and burning.

Thanks

Hi,
I can't address how the stings are the same or different but I'm wondering why you wouldn't wear a full suit with gloves etc. Even in warm water I wear a full 3-2 with gloves to protect my body from stings and my hands from getting torn up. If you're hot you can even get a 1mm or something. There's no guarantee you won't get stung but it will help minimize the risk.

If you have a doctor who is familiar with your allergy he might be able to help you out too.

Have fun in Phuket.

Hi Quarrior,

Bee and jellyfish venoms are not the same, nor am I aware of any cross sensitization between bee venom and the toxins in the nematocytes of jellies.

Still, caution is prudent in an individual with at least one marked sensitivity that produces a serious allergic reaction.

You may wish to speak with your physician about EpiPen http://www.epipen.com/epipen_main.aspx

BTW, ditto what "Nay" has said.

Thanks to both of you. I'll check into the 1mm suit and hood. I'll also talk to the Dr about the epipen. I may need it when wondering around the jungle too.
