It's Friday, lets talk valves. It dawned on me that I have no clue what the letters of different valves represent. I think I know what the P valve represents although. :)

A K valve is a simple, on and off valve. This is the type of valve that sits on top of virtually every modern tank.

A J valve has a built in reserve function. At around 300 PSI, the valve shuts off the diver's air supply as a warning that he is low on air. The reserve is opened and the diver returns to the surface on his last 300 PSI of air. These valves were very common back when there were no SPGs. I have several of these and still use them.

The H valve has two regulator posts to allow the use of two complete reg sets on a single tank.

The letter designations come from the old equipment catalog nomenclature.

I know the different models but why the Letters? Why not T X N valves?

No, only J and K valves have anything to do with the catalogue and being an item description.

The H valve and Y valve are named as such because of their configuration resembling the letters H and Y.

In the early 1950's US Divers (now known as Aqua Lung) catalog the valves were item J and item K in the list of items beginning with item A.
