...you were a noob once.

I'll have to see pictures or some other kind of proof to believe MechDiver was ever a noob.

MechDiver:
Please provide a 4" x 6" bright red button that says "SEARCH". Make the use of this button mandatory, say 10 times, by any one wanting to sign up.

But but but... it gives me soo many threads! I can't read all of those!

Actually, speaking of which. Is it just me, or is that search timer a royal pain in the ass?

Search: "blue pants green shirt"

damn... that's not it

Search: "blue green"

tap....tap....tap....tap....tap.... has it been 30 seconds yet? Ok, try again.

damn.... 15 pages

waiting.... waiting... waiting.... ok; 30 seconds yet?

Search "blue green" user: "uncle pug"

"Sorry the administrator..."

ARGH!

tap...tap....tap...tap

Ok, WTF was I searching for?

Ok yea. Search "blue green" user: "uncle pug"

Ahhh.. there it is.
--------------------------------------------

So the point here is... the search feature is now friggin' annoying with that damn timer. I get scared that I'm going to forget something when I use it all the time. "Oh crap! I forgot to select show posts not show threads. Oh well, i'll try next time I have some free time...

Since searching is tedious, and excessive searching is limited and punishing.. it just discourages searching!

;) ;) ;)

Actually, I believe my first question on SB concerned using two deco tanks on the left side, vs one on each side.
And yes, I did a search first :)

Give the scuba/web board noobs a break! Not everyone is web or diving saavy and this place is HUGE! On another board where I post (my post count is 1900 or so) if a noobs gets lost we give 'em a little grief and then help them find what they're looking for. It only seems fair...you were a noob once.

With everyone using computers and the internet, I don't feel it's beyond someone's ability to monitor a forum or board, then at least do a cursory search on a question they have. And, so what if they get 7 pages of posts. If they're here to learn something, well...

And new boards are the same as one's you're familiar with. They all have search capabilities. If someone is too lazy to do their homework, then ask specific questions, then why should I, or you, use our time to do their work for them?

And that goes for people who want someone else to tell them what equipment to buy.

But at least you have to use it to find out its discouraging :dazzler1:

ehh... I just figured, since it's the whine and cheese forum, I might as well whine about that stupid assed search timer.

Yep. It is... a pain, that is.

On another board that uses the same forum software, the operator of that board explained why they started using the search timer. It turned out that there was some hacker types who could write scripts that would launch repeated searches and could crash a server or the vBulletin software. By using the timer they could limit the damage. I'm not sure if that is why it is used here.

The next time some one asks me for directions, I'll tell them to go buy a flippin' map. Yeah. I didn't want to talk to them anyway.
