For all of you that want to hear the garage story...
My alarm went off at 5:00 am. By 5:10 I was downstairs in the kitchen filling a container I use for soaking my camera when I heard a big thunk. It sounded like it had come from outside and away from the house so I ignored it concentrating on getting out early to meet my buddy.
My garage is attached so I walked down the hall, opened the door, and pressed the button to open the garage door. The door begins to open with the low pitched groan of a horror thriller monster and rises about 18" when it begins to make crunching sounds in stereo from the two side rails (it's a sectional roll-up) and comes to a stop.
Since I've been awake for almost 15 minutes and my thinking is lucid (NOT), I decide that all I need to do is try again. I do... and get the same results. At this point my sleep addled brain reminds me that one of the definitions of insanity is to do the same thing over and expect different results. So I try it again... right, same results.
I analyze the situation and decide that my problem is the garage door opener. I disconnect the garage door from the track and hit the button. No problemo. The opener works just fine as long as it isn't trying to open anything.
Next I try the door itself. It doesn't budge. Using every erg of energy I have to lift the door, it won't move. Stepping back from the door I look up at the two counter balance springs. I count them 1... 2... 3? I now can figure out the big thunk I heard in the kitchen was one of the springs breaking.
I call my buddy, who's cell is off, and leave him a message that he doesn't pick up until I don't show up at the dive site. He makes the round trip for nothing because of my garage door.
I make breakfast and read the paper as the rest of the house starts waking up, surprised I'm home. After breakfast I start calling garage door guys. I call 10. Only 1 calls back (2 more called on Monday). He makes it by around 10:00 am.
He agrees that I need a new spring and he can install it for just under $300. But, remember the crunching sounds from the two side rails? It turns out the door has been warping because of a design flaw. The warp has been working the roller guides and hinges loose from the door. The crunching was the bolts attempting to escape the sheet metal door. Some made it to freedom. After showing me this he tells me that I need the door panels replaced before the rest of the bolts make their way to freedom. No problemo, my door has a lifetime warranty... from a company that went bankrupt last year.
So I need to order new panels and they're in stock and can be installed today as long as I want to change the color of the door to white. But, my door isn't white. It's a color has some kind of romantic name that I can't remember but the color looks like beige and it turns out beige may be available the same day, too. My wife remembered the name of the color and the door man said "that's a special order color" and it won't be available until next week.
So the door man is bringing the new door panels on Thursday. You already know the bill. My Atom 2.0 is on its way to Oceanic. My Reefmaster Mini is on its way to SeaLife. And, I have to buy an SPG so I can monitor my tank pressure while I dive using the RDP tables.
Now, aren't you sorry you asked?
