its like New York down in some places...

Funniest sounds I've ever heard underwater are a dive buddy of mine who uses a rebreather. He talks to himself constantly while we're diving, and has one of the most infectious chuckles I've ever heard. I can make out every word he's saying over the course of a dive. It'd be distracting if it weren't so dang funny ... :D

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

I do that too. I talk and volcalize a lot when I'm relaxed. My buddy says it's handy because he can "hear" how it's going without looking at me.... LOL

R..

I seem able to filter out the reg noise, but I think the OP is right...I hear all kinds of things down there. The one that seems to stand out the most to me is parrotfish grinding away on the coral.

N. Atlantic/Nova Scotia in winter: No sounds, sparse marine life, no boats at all. Summer: 1% louder. What's a dive flag?

Wow, to me it is pretty quiet.

One of the things I love about free diving (just 20-30' stuff to look at things) is the peaceful quiet... it is such a different kind of quiet since the medium is so different than air. It is like you are in a different world, versus bringing a bit of our world down there with us (tank/reg etc.)

I guess I sometimes hear things (I've heard a toad fish!) but so far with my experiences those are exceptions.

And when you encroach upon a Goliath Grouper's territory - well in advance of you seeing him, you might mistake his barks for your buddy signalling for your attention like I did. I was puzzled because I never heard tank banging that sounded like a kettle drum.

I heard this guy and looked around for my buddy to see if he was signalling me, then eventually swam up to him.

The more you can relax, the more you do relax- the more you will hear... and see.

Off of Roatan it is fairly common to be able to hear minor earthquakes. Most divers do not notice them.

Then there's those piezo buzzer alarms on the dive confusers!:cyborg:

Yup, it's a pretty busy place. In between breaths I can hear all kinds of stuff here in Hawaii. Clicking, clacking, grinding. Dive Buddies screaming as I turn off their air or tangle them in the dive flag ;).

The loudest was Lake Travis where we had jetskis zipping along over head. Those things make incredible noises when you start shooting beer cans at them from underwater ;).

Peace,
Greg

Besides the fish and other critters making noise, go diving near a shipping channel or near lots of boat traffic.

I will say one of the most moving sounds I have ever listened to was the whales singing. It made diving Turks & Caicos sublime.

Isn't amazing how loud the quiet is?
I'd rather hear the clicking, clacking and grinding than I would the neighbors dogs barking, car horns, sirens blaring, trucks passing along the road near me or the neighbors yelling at each other!
