I hadn't been buying tanks for very long when I picked this one up cheap. My local shop that still does hydros themselves did a visual after I bought it and didn't question it, but it's totally different from all the ones I've seen.

Not valid in the US. Not sure if Canada still allows symbols.

The good news is that I don't see anything that precludes this tank from getting a legit hydro. You can stamp pretty much anything you like on the shoulder of a tank as long as you don't obscure the required DOT markings.

I looked back at the archived pictures from the listing when I bought it, and it had a VIP sticker from a dive shop in Mexico, so that explains it. Really happy to find out it wasn't a backyard stamp because it failed a real hydro.

That explains it .... it's Carlos' hydro stamp. 😄

If it failed "real" hydro, wouldn't it have been condemned in some way (XX's stamped somewhere, threads destroyed, etc)?

My shop in the south bay puts "XXX" over the serial numbers and the makers marks. Usually the owners dont want them back but may take the valves for spares. If the customer leaves the tank, most do, they are cut in half and then given to a recycler. I have kept a couple of steels at they make nice bell, a bit heavy but nice.

"When a cylinder must be condemned, the requalifier must—

(i) Communicate condemnation of the cylinder as follows:

(A) Stamp a series of Xs over the DOT-specification number and the marked pressure or stamp “CONDEMNED” on the shoulder, top head, or neck using a steel stamp....."
