Ya know... I am really not a superstitious person..

But... I just don’t get people boasting of xx,000 failure free dives.

I believe in Murphy’s law. And a close amendment to Murphy’s dictates that I will be humbled by mistakes and problems at a rate proportionate to how cocky, or confident I am in my infallibility.

Maybe donating to this site will reverse your luck? LOL!

Chit happens, its how one deals with the situation that counts. I have not suffered a cat loss...but the little things can add up fast and a problem is usually a number of smaller issues blowing out of proportion into a much larger one. My wife splashed this past September with a relatively new BC and I watched her release valve separate and sink...she could not hold air! Fortunately there was a spare on the boat of similar make....I always run a checklist prior to splashing. Just a quick run through all moving parts to make sure they operate as designed...once you splash, then we hope for the best.

Hi flyboy,

I liked your post. I too run the checklist on deck and then a bubble check of my buddy as we descend.

Chit happens, it's how one deals with the situation that counts. I have been blessed with the ability to slow down, or zone out, when the chit hits the fan. As a former tug boat captain I have been in a few harry situations. In other endeavors the same has held true. So far, I don't seem to be the person who reacts with panic.

However, I always have a plan B and C. Maybe I am just more prepared than most!?!

Did your wife have to ditch some lead or was she slightly positive anyway?

Tithing to the church of Scubaboard...interesting thought! A tithe may endear me with the Goddess of dive gear...
I should contemplate another tithe as I need to be in the good graces of the Goddess of responsible buddies...

Yeah, yeah, now I get it!

Hi Caveeagle,

+1. There is no Pulitzer Prize button, so you will just have accept the +1.

Your profound statement is the story of my 60 years.

At the same time, they say insanity is doing things the same way every time and expecting different results. In this thread, we've had divers reporting new BC dump valves coming off, getting entangled while diving under a pier at night while towing a flag and diving inside a wreck at 100 feet with an 80. Some people should use pony bottles. I prefer to check my gear before getting in the water and not getting myself in situations I could not extricate myself from instantly.
Some divers tend to either disregard their training and throw equipment at a problem or they really believe they are an accident waiting to happen. I don't know what goes through their minds. I prefer not to drag around extra tanks, backup computers, masks, cutting tools, etc. The dives I make allow a free ascent to the surface at any point during the dive.

plan your dive, dive your plan...it works every time until it doesn't!

Other dives by other people may not be like yours. I find your "my way or the highway" attitude on the fine line between sad and irritating.

I don't care how you or anyone else dives. My rule pertains to one person, my usual guest on my boat. Just because you don't like that rule, there is no need to say bad things about me personally.

I agree 100% ! If I showed up to ride on your boat and was told to lose the pony, I would be left with two options only and no HURT FEELINGS! It's your boat...there your rules! I'd respect that.

And they are only my rules because of the way my friend uses his pony. He would stay on the bottom until he was low on air, switch to his pony for his ascent, suck it dry, then switch back to his primary and suck it dry. I don't allow him to use his pony on my boat any longer because I don't want him thinking he has a security blanket in case he screws up. I'd prefer he dives the way Merry and I do. I didn't say others can't use ponies. My boat is only big enough for three divers.

Why dont you steer him to 120's or doubles then?
