I think he wants to k now why PADI has 40 meters/130 feet as its maximum for recreational diving. After this is just before required decompression stops start, and (according to the Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, it is when narcosis begins to affect almost all divers.

Beyond 40 meters you will almost certainly need decompression, at which point it is no longer recreational diving.

Deco diving has been part and parcel of other agencies recreational diving for decades.

I am going to make a wild estimate that this is the 678th time over the years that we have had a thread in which people argue over the various ways people use the word 'recreational" in regard to diving.

Well PADI is not the sole arbiter of what recreational diving is.

PADI's Recreational Dive Limit is 40 metres. WHY?

Apologies in advance for answering a question with more questions but if you answer these for yourself, you will have a better understanding of the recommended limits.

What is the NDL at 130'?
What is min gas at 130' to get two divers back to the surface?
What is the PSI / BAR in the standard aluminum 80 for the above question?
How narc'd are you at 130'?
What is the gas density at 130' and why should you be concerned?

None of the above is meant to be flippant. I, or we, could answer them for you but there is a lot of value in answering them for yourself.

Recreational and diving are two terms that should as a great perecentage of couples, never have been married
Technical said innovation and ideas back then, now other than to segregate, it's not anything more than diving

I do not think insurance company gives a toss on the definition of recreational or technical diving. To them it is either commercial or recreational.

For "Preferred Plan" p.108
While there is no depth....all diving & snorkelling activities are WITHIN the training and breathing gas requirements.....

Your question does not include anything about conditions of the dive. What standards are you trying to imply?
Also from surface to 40m how many minutes are you taking?

NDL depends on DC setting or tables used also if you are on 21% or a mixed gas to say 25%
Emergency controlled ascent at 20m a minute? What ascent rate are you using the normal max10m minute or a slow 5m a minute?
Minimum gas if you are within NDL I don't know anyone that would have less than 150bar after 10 minutes... of course not mentioned are currents, down up sideways or calm as. If a slow calm ascent with sac rate of say 10l/m or an effort where someone is using 20l/m?
210 bar is normal in an AL80
I've done many dives to 40m with other divers, how narced am I? Not narced enough to not pay attending to my gas consumption, NDL or Deco time, and my ascent rate as I ascend.
5atm

Not quite 40m... 38.2m Taking a video... still paying attention to my NDL. Set my NDL alert to 4 minutes on my Perdix.
Gaspo2 .97 quite safe.

Dive buddy in my video about 2m away from me. Nobody felt narced.. but were we?

See this dive to 45m.... started with 210 bar. had 180 bar at 45m took six minutes to get there... was looking for a dropped go pro so not in a rush
