I always felt that the clear skirts weren't as flexible as the black skirts, therefore they didn't provide for as good of a seal. But that just may have been the first mask I bought, which was an overpriced ScubaPro mask.

SoCal Tec Divers - NAUI Technical Equipment Configuration (NTEC)

For purposes of safety, functionality, and uniformity of instruction, gear configuration during all in-water training activities must be the same for instructors and students. Standardized equipment rigging is critical to the safety, success, and effectiveness of technical diver training. The NTEC configuration is required for all SCTD courses.

Back Gas Regulators
7 ft primary hose mounted to right post
22 or 24in secondary mounted to left post, secured with bungee necklace
Metal housed SPG attached to left post with proper hose length for clean routing (typically 24in or less)
BC inflation hose attached to right post
Dry suit inflation attached to left post or additional inflation bottle

I think you'll find that you wont be taking classes from any dudes if your gear is not configured for the type of diving you're looking to get trained for.

Or "black" skirt mask?

Or continuous webbing on the backplate?

And how's the pull dump on the corrugated hose affect reliability? You don't have to use it. I got it as part of my wing setup and I never used it.

Maybe these guys should tell Lamar Hires of Dive Rite how he couldn't have dove all those technical dives (caves, wreck penetrations, deep, exploration) with the Transpac harness and its fancy dandy non-continuous webbing...

I know for the GUE fundies you do not need doubles or a canister light....but if you dive this way, you can only get a rec pass (no tech pass). I don't know if NTEC has a similar set-up, or if they required you to be in doubles and diving with a can light. Either way, tech diving is certainly not cheap, so I'm trying to take my time collecting my gear....and will end up getting a rec pass only, which is okay with me since I don't even know if I want to do tech diving enough to invest that much at this point.

the canister (primary) light is used to maintain team communication even during bright day dives with good viz, not just used for night, wreck or cave dives.

i don't know about TWO backups, but you need at least one backup so you can train in the proper team protocol what to do when your primary takes a dump. (ie. instructor tells you to turn it off)

BTW i don't know if you NEED this for class -- every agency is different -- just pointing out WHY you can incorporate it into your rec OW diving.
