I noticed there are many computer gurus on the board so thought I'd ask the question.

After installing the latest Microsoft critical updates to XP home the following problem occured.

Each time I close Internet explorer i get an application error msg involving IEXPLORE.EXE, which says, The instruction at "0x01522ce8" referenced memory at "0x01778ac0". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. Runtime error 216 at 00002CE8
Other than that, the browser works perfectly fine, just gets annoying after awhile having to click ok. after each error msg.

I have searched the web and MS knowledge base, this looks like a sub seven virsus but scans are good and no other signs.

I got rid of it by going into Tools, Internet options, Advanced, and unchecked the box that said ENABLE THIRD PARTY Browser Extensions.

However that also got rid of my google toolbar, which I really like because it blocks popups. If I reinstall google toolbar, I get the error again.

I noticed that MS is touting their own web search bar with latest version that is causing the problem. So are they trying to muscle out google as they did Netscape.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

I would almost bet $ that the error is caused by a spyware/malware that is running on your PC and has attached itself to iexplore.exe - the problem will clear up when you clean your PC of these softwares.

This thread should help with that:

It's possible that you've picked up a third party extension that you can't see (adware) ..... Do a search on your C drive for the following file names and tell us what you find:

Bi.dll;
Biprep.exe;
Belt.exe;
Belt.ini;
Belt.inf;
Susp.exe;
Susp.ini;
Susp.inf

I find that always have to use SpyBot S&D and Adaware to get most everything....the fact that both of them find things the other didn't makes me wonder if there aren't still a few things lingering...

Well I did not find any of these files, but you folks did put me on the right track. I did an adware and spyware sweep and cleaned up alot of trash.

I am pretty sure the culprit is a nasty critter called IBIS Toolbar, it is distributed by Websearch.com. A google clone, but it is a nasty spy. I have not been able to get rid of it. Worst part I never installed it. Seems it has placed itself in no less than 12 different places including the registry. Doing a web search comes up with info on it. None of the freeware tools seems to be able to get rid of it. I found one site with a fairly long procedure to follow.

Maybe this needs to moved to whine and cheese. I am pretty cheezed about some company being able to install software on my computer and I cannot remove it.

Thanks for help, and anyone that has info or help on destroying IBIs, I will appreciate it.

Adware defined it as a "Possible Browser Hijack attempt".
