As a dive shop monkey (part time, minimum wage...) I've been quite lucky. I get equpiment on my birthday and at Christmas, and generally pay trade price on what I'm buying. :D

Hate me? ;)

But then again I guess it's a trade off. I work more hours than I'm paid, will buy rounds at the pub and do "overtime" and shift cover without pay.

Do I mind? Do I hell!

Typically a DM candidate does not get discounts unless they just happen to be a good regular customer. Bigger discounts generally go to the individuals helping the shop. Some of us do not get paid and really don't want to be paid by the shop. We do it for fun and they help reduce some of the expenses we incur by helping them out. It's a win-win situation. We get gear for less and they get free help. They also get free advertising by the instructors and DMs wearing the gear they sell.

I am not sure if I am qualified to have this kind of discount in my position as DM candidate.

In addition, I don’t intend to jump in the professional world.

I have in interesting deffinition of "Shop Monkey"... I am in high school and work for a dive shop... I am not a dropout, and I do not just say "duh"....

Then obviously you are not a monkey. You are a dive shop employee.
