I flooded my D-2000 after years and years of use without a problem. Like you, I flooded the battery compartment, and there were some water droplets in the bulb cavity. I'm sure it was an o-ring problem. The o-rings on the battery compartment of that style take a lot of wear and tear with the screw cap of the battery compartment, so I replace them when they lose their shape, but maybe this one was at the end of its life and just twisted a tiny bit and didn't make a good seal.
I live in Thailand and there's no service facility here, but there is one in Kuala Lumpur (as well as in Singapore and Japan), so I sent it down there. The fixed it pretty quickly and it was a lot less expensive than buying a new one. I think it cost about $200 for the repair. It works just fine now.
I like the washer solution. I think I'll try that, even though I'm certain that this wasn't the cause of my flood.
