That's a commonly posted opinion, and the same opion I hold about STROBES. (the super bright xenon flash tubes similar to a camera photoflash)

OTOH, I've done many night dives with divers that had flashing Lazer Stiks or other similar LED marker lights and they didn't bother me at all.

YMMV.

CONSTANT ON!! Strobes are EXTREMELY irritating!! I did one night dive with a class that someone had a strobe..the instructor turned it off mid dive.

Glo-toob FX seems the best bet, it has "throb" mode.

On a recent Red Sea live-aboard I carried my blue glo-toob (on the dash-dash-pause setting) and got a few compliments about how helpful it was in spotting and identifying me during night dives.

It's nowhere near as irritating as a strobe.

Wow! I wonder how all you guys survive driving around town at night with all those other drivers' turn signals irritating you.

they're not on all the time...but did you ever get stuck behind someone who left their blinker on for 5 miles?

I think that my original question has been pretty well answered, and I did have a feeling that the flashing light would prove to be a nuisance. Now I am wondering about color. What would show up best, (as that is really the whole idea of this business)? My wife wants orange lites, but I am hearing from you guys that perhaps other colors are better? Thanx for all your input.

Remember that its communication: identification...if your wife wants an orange one, get her an orange one. Get a different color for yourself. (Just don't switch!) :D

The goal is to be able to monitor or track the movement of different divers in the dark...while distinguishing who is who among them...

Flashing lights and night diving can induce vertigo into some divers very, very easily.

Best stay with a constant "on" light.

It does get to be a pain on the road especially the newer bluish colored headlights. They just BLIND me. There isn't anything more agrivating or TOTALLY USELESS than wearing a divelight where it's constantly in everyones eyes.

We keep track of each other and communicate by way of hand held lights. With practice you can keep them out of other divers eyes and they do everything you need a light to do. If your worried about having one fail...carry a backup or two.

Wearing lights is silly unless you're a sump diver and need your hands to see with or you're going to a costumme party dressed as a neon sign. For diving there's just no reason to do it.

They aren't strobes either.
