Saturday Oct 9th at Dutch Springs there was an incident on the penninsila that apparently called for 3 ambulences and 2 police cars. From the student side I could see that dive gear went away in one of the police cars (not a good sign) and what looked like (I hope this is not the case) A completely coverd streatcher going in to the ambulence. Then on Sunday the 10th there was another incident that resulted in ambulence and ploice response on the student side.
Does anyone know what happened?

Jason

First off, I wasn't there on Saturday so you really need to hear from someone who was. I was, however, there on Sunday and talked for a while to one of the rescue crew. So take this as second hand but at that directly from someone who was involved in the rescue.

As you said, a diver alerted staff that there was a non-breathing buddy diver. Diver was brought up, not breathing may have had a carotid pulse. Rescue breathing and O2 administered when the diver was brought back to the dock by Dutch Springs staff, breathing was restarted at the ambulance. Bloody discharge from mouth indicating lung injury of some type. Hypoxic for who knows how long, but instruments indicated dive time was short, certainly less than 10 minutes total.

Diver taken to local hospital, treated in ICU on ventilator as near drowning. Low oxygen saturation. DCS/chamber treatment deemed not to be required given run time. Diver still in ICU as of Sunday, function not known.

Anything else would be speculation, including several scenarios we discussed yesterday, but as near as I could judge those are the pure facts from the horse's mouth. Soneone who was there will need to fill in details.

I was there on Sat, I was on the surface bringing a group of students back from the plane, the accident happened near the crane. One of our group who was not on this particular dive participated in the initial treatment on shore. I understand it involved two people, the first was a woman who had a problem at depth and the second was her buddy who from what I understand had a problem on shore. Apparently there were at least two doctors there as divers as she was brought to shore. By the time I got back to shore everyone was loaded into the ambulances but they stayed parked there working on them for quite a while (seems like maybe 10 mins.). Our area was directly adjacent to where the ambulances were parked but I was there with a bunch of young students and a couple of parents so we just stayed out of the way.

I looked for an article but couldn't find any in the Allentown papers. Any one seen an article?

That link is to a story describing a fatality at Dutch Springs in September 2003.

I was there, pretty close. I will pass on what I heard and saw. The buddy was out by the crane on the surface calling for help. The Dutch Springs Staff responded and brought the unconsious diver and buddy back to the entry area.

The buddy was saying it appeard to be an out of air problem at the bottom, he donated his Octo, she took a few breaths from it and spit it out. After that there was no more explanation.

Very sad.

With so little information I'll skip saying what I think it sounds like but I sure pray that the family cand find comfort some how and that the industry takes notice.

Your right... I'm sorry....

I read the story quickly, it essentially matched a lot of what I saw so I put it up without noticing the date...My mistake.
(see what happens when I forget to have my atty. review documents)

It is a sad commentary on dive accidents that I was able to obtain a copy of an article dated (03) for another accident and have it be so similar that I assumed they were one in the same, date (less the year) and all.

My apologies

Having said all that has anyone found the real article???

One of my instructors was involved with the rescue on Sat. When we spoke on Monday he said the woman was ok but still being monitored.

She is ok and out of the hospital.
