"...highest murder rate in the Western Hemisphere..." Is that correct?

Want to ask me why I never connect on the mainland?

I have passed on several trips to honduras for this reason alone... Id rather dive in a camel watering hole somewhere in the middle east.

It isn't good for tourism because people think it is happening on the Bay Islands.

So far, this has not been the case.

Every so often dire crime stories about Honduras come up, and although quite true, they pertain to the mainland.

When people get killed in the Bay Islands, they were locals who already were looking nervously over their shoulders.

Visit the Bay Islands, stay in the tourist zones, then go directly home. A good plan.

I've always been happy to fly in & out of Roatan, even on the way to Utila - even tho the resort suggested changing on the mainland. The two who tried that arrived a day late by ferry but then their problem was in Florida.

My first trip around 9-11-01 ended with us coming home by way of another country where we overnighted, but it was ok - Taca got us a bus and a great hotel. Otherwise IAH-RTB non-stop please.

the area of the country this article is talking about is on the pacific, hundreds of miles and light years away from the bay islands and the caribbean coast. that said, how can changing planes on the mainland be dangerous, i've never heard of muggings or kidnappings in the san pedro sula airport departure lounge. thats like avoiding changing planes in detroit because of crime in the city. i have traveled by bus all over northern and northwestern honduras and have never had a problem or seen one. during these travels i've met 100's of european, israeli and aussie backpackers, north americans are the only ones who seem worried about the crime statistics. that said, u.s. crime statistics seem high to the european and aussie travelers, so they take the same precautions in the u.s. that they would in central america. good sense prevails when avoiding crime in any country.

i remember a few years back when many european countries advised their citizens to avoid south florida due to all the crimes committed on foreign tourists.
it's all relative.
