shipwreck show- - - - http://www.shipwreckshow.com
Sorry I'm not familiar w/ Detroit and have no real idea where it is... particularly sorry that its looking like I'm not going! Whatever the case I know a few people that are going and it should be a great show and even better chance to interface with some people that could help give you even more information. Good info on it at the website and some good "comments" on it over at zendiving.com

I must say that I've read the last couple of posts and replies several times. And I guess I'm just a big ole' chicken.... For me at least what you are about ready to bite off and do is a pretty big step. Kudos (?!?) if it comes off, but boy if it were me I'd probably try to slow down a touch, dive some lake with groups and a chartered boat, dive some with some clubs, dive some at the quarry and sporadically nibble with a couple independent trips out. That's me though and as already noted I don't know much.

The books will probably be of great value.

Am I reading it correctly- - you, your dive buddy and boat. Anyone staying top side? I don't know if that's "normal" in the great lakes or not, but to me (the chicken, no nothing etc) that seems to throw up a red flag. :-)

My first thought was also on the 02 kit. Presuming you get the training to use, and yep to the rescue class which might be more of an eyeopener than you think.

Safety sausage that is "high quality" and/or lift bag might be in order with a safety spool to deploy it from "depth". I say this as opposed to the $18 plastic type that gets filled on the surface... and waived to a passing boat. Good idea to practice and now it before going on the trip too (quarry...).

I would imagine that you might be getting ready for a big shock going from the tropics to the lakes. For me a few test the water type dives (e.g. quarry to see about the water temp, paid boat to see some of the norms) would be essential. Maybe others can straighten me out....

Sorry I don't have any experience on the Mares. My LDS sells sherwood.... thus the best is sherwood (I chuckle when they recommend the maximus for cave diving, haven't read or seen any of the cave divers actually going that route...) and the shop to the south sells Aeris(?!?) which... and the shop in texas that... ohhh why go there). There are a number of gear questions answers on the board. I'm sure its all good- - with the qualifier of what you are using it for. Most of the answers I see tend to revolve around Apeks or Scuba Pro. But then as a human I only see and hear what I want to see and hear... :-)

Good luck- - keep us posted on how the planning comes along- - and can any of us join you?!? :-)

Dye pack is on the list, and strobe is a great idea.

Boaters Safety was taken when I was 16, but I'm looking for a course now. There are several online...any experience?

o2 and epirb are goodones too! The list keeps growing!

The Great Lakes Wrecking Crew from this board is having a meet-n-greet at Gilboa April 28-30 and you're more than welcome to join us! Might even be able to ask around and see if anyone has equipment they would be willing to let you try. I have a spare Dive Rite G2500Ice (regulator) I'd be willing to let you try for the weekend.

Caverdave-
You are right about biting off a bunch. Our first trips on Erie will be with a charter. Probably Discovery out of Wildwood Marina. For 25 we can dive one tank with an experienced crew. If I have my way, the next day we will head back on our own to the same place and dive it again.

I'm also hoping that we will findsome folks with experience from a club who will want to head out with us.

I do want someone topside. Any takers? Maybe it will work out for us that we will find another pair and we can alternate surface intervals.

I'm not worried about the temperatures, but my wife is a freeze baby, so this will be interesting.

the rescue class certainly would teach me new skills and it will certainly be on the education list before underwater photography. Safety is my #1 priority.....

I'm getting excited. Tomorrow night I should have a good idea when the boat will be in the water, and I just booked a dive with discovery charters on may3rd and may5th.

Thanks for the invite. I will put that on my calendar, and set that as the date to be ready to dive. Might be a good time to complete my advanced ow and figure out weighting for freshwater with a 7mm.

Thanks for the offer on the reg, hopefully I will be all geared up, but I may take you up on the offer. I think I've settled on the mares abyss. It fits the bill and at 299, I can't copmplain about the price.

but, but but

ohhh ok see you in April
(and here this was going to be my prime time to get rid of my like new BC, Sherwood regulator and 7mm suit... or at least keep posing questions to elude to trying before buying...)

BER Thanks for the reminder on the Meet and Greet- - I almost forgot about it and am certainly looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hey Dave I'm not competing honest! I'm not looking to sell that reg I just got it! I couldn't turn down the price, I bought one just like it with longer hoses last year :D The one I was offering to loan has never even been in the water. I LOVE my Dive Rite

Paul,
You'll like Discovery Dive Charters. When you book the all day trips they provide drinks, sandwiches and hot soup! I believe the one tank dives are just drinks and the mid-range dives they provide sandwiches and drinks. They are a first rate service operation, I lost my snorkel on one of the wrecks and the next trip they took to that wreck they found it and mailed it back to me :D I was thrilled to get it back, I needed it for a video project that I had started before that trip and there was no way I'd be able to find another like it.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Meet-n-Greet!

Hi there,

I would definitely think that you may be interested in Meet and Greet before you buy too much stuff. There will be experienced Great Lakes divers there and it would be a good time to pick up tips around the campfire and see what gear that we are all using.

I normally carry some extra regs that you may want to sample as well.

I am in the chicken category as well. Point one is that Superior has very little in the way of OW type of dives. Most of the dives in Superior are in the advanced/technical range with the exception of Munising.

Point two is that if you plan to take a boat out on the Great Lakes, you really should another qualified boater on that boat. The weather changes fast on the Great Lakes. Something may happen to you and someone else may have to get the boat back.

Your plan is pretty ambitious, but not impossible.

Another charter service for Lake Erie to talk to would be Osprey Dive Charters.

More later, but I have to run to get to work.

Don't forget our cool GLWC tee-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, and jackets :) .

Yeah, and I know where you got that that Dive Rite reg from, too :) .

You know where I got the first one ;) The second was more than $200 cheaper so I had to buy it even though I don't need it---yet.

Hey Paul, Brian's comment about carrying extra regs for sampling is an understatement of monstrous proportion. It's more like he carries a dive shop with him and if he knows someone might need gear he brings a whole warehouse ;) He's a really handy buddy to have and now he's planning on getting a vehicle that's bigger than a Mustang--the local shops are going to drool when they see his inventory LOL!
Meet-n-greet is a great place to get to try different equipment, just let the Wrecking Crew know what we need to bring along :D
