shipwreck show- - - - http://www.shipwreckshow.com
Sorry I'm not familiar w/ Detroit and have no real idea where it is... particularly sorry that its looking like I'm not going! Whatever the case I know a few people that are going and it should be a great show and even better chance to interface with some people that could help give you even more information. Good info on it at the website and some good "comments" on it over at zendiving.com
I must say that I've read the last couple of posts and replies several times. And I guess I'm just a big ole' chicken.... For me at least what you are about ready to bite off and do is a pretty big step. Kudos (?!?) if it comes off, but boy if it were me I'd probably try to slow down a touch, dive some lake with groups and a chartered boat, dive some with some clubs, dive some at the quarry and sporadically nibble with a couple independent trips out. That's me though and as already noted I don't know much.
The books will probably be of great value.
Am I reading it correctly- - you, your dive buddy and boat. Anyone staying top side? I don't know if that's "normal" in the great lakes or not, but to me (the chicken, no nothing etc) that seems to throw up a red flag.
My first thought was also on the 02 kit. Presuming you get the training to use, and yep to the rescue class which might be more of an eyeopener than you think.
Safety sausage that is "high quality" and/or lift bag might be in order with a safety spool to deploy it from "depth". I say this as opposed to the $18 plastic type that gets filled on the surface... and waived to a passing boat. Good idea to practice and now it before going on the trip too (quarry...).
I would imagine that you might be getting ready for a big shock going from the tropics to the lakes. For me a few test the water type dives (e.g. quarry to see about the water temp, paid boat to see some of the norms) would be essential. Maybe others can straighten me out....
Sorry I don't have any experience on the Mares. My LDS sells sherwood.... thus the best is sherwood (I chuckle when they recommend the maximus for cave diving, haven't read or seen any of the cave divers actually going that route...) and the shop to the south sells Aeris(?!?) which... and the shop in texas that... ohhh why go there). There are a number of gear questions answers on the board. I'm sure its all good- - with the qualifier of what you are using it for. Most of the answers I see tend to revolve around Apeks or Scuba Pro. But then as a human I only see and hear what I want to see and hear...
Good luck- - keep us posted on how the planning comes along- - and can any of us join you?!?
