I guess I'll soon be an OFWF. I start out for Ottawa tomorrow. Any recommendations for dive shops? Maybe one that sells turtles or jet fins. I need new fins to fit my drysuit. Is there anywhere nearby where I could jump in the water after work or on the weekends? Looking forward to getting out and meeting some of you local divers.

A few of the dive shops on Ottawa have there own pools Last recall there was about 6 shops total. I preferred Diverswarehouse Laurie and Robyn are cool

if you want jet fins the only shop in town that sells them (AFAIK) is Burtons dive over in Vanier (beechwood/vanier parkway area)

Diving is a non-issue, 45-60mins to the best freshwater diving in the world
about 80minutes to the best dive shop in the world too :D

To bad about moving to Ottawa, I hear the dive shops out there are into throating cutting each other, but do provide good service in between as a bonus.

Welcome to Ottawa

Which dive shop to use depends on where you will live in town.

In the westend you have The Dive Centre in Stittsville and Kanata Diving Supply in Kanata
In the South you have Divers Warehouse.
Centrally you have Burtons Dive Service, Sharkys and Dolphinos.
In the East you have Adventures in Diving (although Burton's is also east).

Ottawa divers also use Cornwall (Ron's Scuba) and Brockville stores (Sea'n'Sky, Dive Tech and Dive Brockville)

Over the years I have used every store listed above. Some are better than others. I'd recommend that you visit them to make up your own mind. I'll give you my opinions if you want them. They all have webpages. Most run weekend charters as well as Wednesday night fun dives in the summer.

The other thing you might want to check out is independent clubs. There are two active independent clubs in town. They are Forces Sub Aqua Club (FSAC) and Ottawa Beavers Scuba Club (OBSC). A web search will guide you to their web pages.

There is also an active chapter of Save Our Shipwrecks (SoS). They offer underwater archeology courses from time to time.

A good point to start is www.ontariodiver.com It has links to most if not all of the above.

Enjoy

GDI - AFAIK none of the current Ottawa dive stores have their own pools. The only one that did went bankrupt 7 years ago.

Well that is about when I left and moved to Florida

I live in Ottawa and I love it here... Where are you going to be located ?

In the east: "Adventures in Diving"
In the south " Diver's Warehouse"
In the west "the Dive center" in Kanata
Ottawa Centre: Sharky's Scuba and Dolphino's
In Vanier: "Burtons Dive"

I've been to all of them, they are all good. PM me if you want more info .

BTW Welcome to Ottawa (when you get here)

Technically not Ottawa but Plongee H2O in Gatineau has a pool. It's about 25 min North of Center Town.
