Hello Jean,

I just bought a Ikelite housing for my Canon S90 and currently have problems with the control ring gear that comes with it.

The control ring keeps slipping when its in the housing. It is unable to 'click' and turn properly. Sometimes, it turns well in one direction but cannot turn at all in the other direction; so I could be left with a aperture of f/8.0 that cannot be turned down when I am underwater!

I've placed the control ring correctly as suggested in the manual and also ensuring that it remains in place when I seat the camera in the housing. I've even tried to invert the control ring the other way to see if that works, but it doesn't!

Initialy, I thought the problem could be restricted to my incorrect placing of the control ring gear but I've done a search on the internet and apparently another user also faces the same problem.

Would you have any advice to correct the problem?

Thank you!

Hello Jean,

Thanks for the fast reply! I have the newer full control ring which allows 360º rotation. The problem occurs both on the surface and at depth! So, I've given up and use the shortcut button on the S90 to adjust aperture instead of the control ring.

While turnning the dial on the outside of the Ikelite housing, the control ring gear also turns on the inside with it. But there doesn't seem enough friction on the control gear ring inside to turn the control ring on the S90 itself!

Does the gear feel like it's binding up at all? Are you pushing the gear as far as it can go onto the camera?

If you PM me your address I can certainly send a replacement control ring which would hopefully solve your problem. We are continuing to investigate this problem, but I admit we're a bit baffled by it. When these are checked in house they are very tight on the camera's control ring.

What we've seen is that the inside of the port on some of these extends a bit too far. This squeezes against the control ring and distorts it enough to make it slip. This was hopefully solved with the newer style control ring, but it sounds like it may be binding.

Yes, I push the gear control ring as far as in can go on the S90 before placing it in the housing but the control ring still does not seem to bind well with the S90's control ring.

Yup, I was initially baffled by it too because I trust (and still do!) Ikelite for their quality and engineering structure of their housing.

Anyway, Thanks Jean for the offer of sending a replacement control ring, hopefully mine's just an isolated case and the replacement ring would work fine! I've sent you a PM for my address.

Interesting.. first I was upset that there was a new control ring, and now I am happy I don't have one. With the split ring version, after I removed the burr inside the ring that caused camera to stop working due to a lens error from that burr pushing the lens into the port entrance, I got slippage of the ring. Not sure what the new one has inside, but a smooth surface does not provide a great deal of friction. Tiny spots of glue on the inside of the ring placed to align with the camera gear teeth fixed the issue (for now anyway).

I'm live in Thailand and I've same problem pleas help. how can i treat my S90 ring control slipping. i've tried S95 ring controll it really work on S90.
If not disturbing please send S95 control ring to me thank you very much.

orifec,

The newest control ring incorporates an o-ring which prevents slippage. Please email your shipping address to me at brett@ikelite.com. I will have an updated control ring sent to you.
