Lake would have been nice, all those turns in a small pool eat up some time.

I suspect I did open turns and a wall push. I definitely held my arms in streamline in front of me the whole time so that the mask wasn't what was breaking the water.

I would have preferred open water.

It's nice doing it in a lake. It is closer in relation to what the scenario would be in real life too.

I passed during my third try:
18;30 Jet fins
18;40 Regular blade fins (the very next day =-=*)
17;32 Blade fins (3 days after)
:D

I tried to push off the walls during my turns this time and quickly realized why I never did that before. My foot pockets basically turned into a drag chute when ever I pushed off the wall, so I quickly decided to not even bother.

I did find out that by doing alternate kicking (ie. kick-glide-kick), I got rid of that burning feeling in my shins. (not my calfs or thighs for some reason, that never happened )
I decided to mix it up with frog kicks and flutter kicks, adding in dolphin kicks to give me an extra push to and off the walls.

In any case I'm officially in the DM class now!

I need to look at my figures from back then, but I think I did it in around 13 minutes in my jets. I just pounded out a flutter with my Jets, but then I have very big and muscular legs. I don't think I could keep that pace today.

Wow that's quick!
If I were fresh out of highschool I could probably beat 18mins on Jets, probably not 13 though.
Sadly not exercising throughout all of my 1st year of college did me in.
Still trying to play catchup xD

Are you allowed to just swim it freestyle, or do you have to use fins?

You must use fins, and you can't use your hands.
It must be done the good ol fashion skin swim style :D
Mask and snorkel, fins, weightbelt, and diving suit (3mm in our case).
You can choose which kick to use and you can mix it up as you swim however you like.
